I have 2 x WD 150GB Velociraptors in Raid0 which are 2-3 months old, i am wondering if i should sell them and get 2 x OCZ Apex or Vertex SSD Drives, like 2 x 30GB as it is only for operating system and a few games. Would 2 x SSD's run games quicker than the 2 x Velociraptors ?

I am using the spec in sig and using the onboard Raid controller.

Thanks

SSD's will run the whole system significantly faster overall. Games are cpu bound when it comes to loading and how well coded (multi-core loading etc.) they are but SSD's will make a difference.

Vertex is what you need (if you go with SSD), steer clear from Apex.

SSD Raid is instant. Period. Raptors are noisy, bulky, and slow (From experience using both).

A single vertex drive would be faster than your velociraptors in raid0. Just buy the 60GB Vertex. Then you could upgrade to a vertex2 or a pci-e ssd when these 2 new ssd's are out over the next few months, no point wasting your money on 2 vertex drives when the vertex2 is likely weeks away. vertex2 uses internal raid0 btw and is sata3 but will be backwards compatible with sata2.

SSd's will run everything faster. I have to agree with Clocka - if you can get a 60Gb vertex then I'd do that. It's what I originally wanted but as they were out of stock I went the RAID 0 route with 3x30Gb instead... and omg they fly!

I started with only 2 but decided to get the extra one as I wanted larger capacity for apps and games to be loaded. I had thought to run just the OS from the array but once I had it running and saw how fast it was I knew I just had to get all progs running off the array.

I've gone from aprox 80-90Mb/s read speed on my 1Tb Sammy F1 to about 620Mb/s read speed on the SSD array. All running of the ICH10R onboard controller. Obviously running RAID 0 increases chances of losing data as it would only take the loss of one of my SSD's to fry the array... so backups are vital. And hence why I think a single larger SSD might be better for the majority of users - but at the end of the day it's your choice! :)

Have look through OCZ Vertex Owners Thread for more info / benchies etc.

The first month or so is CRITICAL with SSDs. If it is to fail it will fail within a month, but if it doesn't then you can be confident it will not fail (until it runs out of write cycles).

Furthermore, heat and noise are non-existent on these things.

I'm still running one of the original OCZ Core Series SSD's and I'm still pleased with my purchase.

The Core series suffers from stuttering at times and can lag quite badly... but with the new Apex and Vertex series these issues have completely gone... so you've got no excuse not to go SSD now apart from the price of course :)

Just need to get rid of my 2 velociraptors and i think i will get 3 x 30GB Vertex drives as i have seen really good results on here using them :)
