Hdd performance

i ve got 2 Hdd in my system,a samsung 500gb f3 and a Hitachi 300gb.
the samsung is the main drive with everything on it and i am using the hitachi for backups created by windows,is this the best use for my hard drives, im not very clued up in this area

so would it be best just to have the one drive and put the backups on that or notbother with backups and save everything to discs say once a month?

ok,not heard of that before , will look into it thanks,so the hitachi is in the system even though i store everything that i run and the os on my samsung?
