HDD Temps?

i have 4HDD's ontop of eachother in a rack with a 120mm fan blowing onto them. what should the temps be? 1 is used for windows and the others for downloading and storage?

Depends on the brand and model, usual max is about 55 degrees.

Is their any air gap at all between each drive? Or are they just squished together right on top of each other?

there are gaps between all the drives and there between 35 - 40'c normally bit hotter when converting movies and copying files.

Those temps are fine - the fan is a good idea, and will increase the life of your drives nicely.

The temperature depends on ther drive, my smallest dirive 80GB idles at 20C (i've seen it go down to 17C) and my largest 300GB idles at 27C. I have 3 HDDs in a rack with a 120mm fan in front of it.

What you can do is install Speedfan and go to the HDD SMART check. It lets you compare your temperature with the average of other people who use the same HDD.

mates maxtor drive is almost hitting 60c and is getting crashes in windows. could be a drive issue im guessing.

Maxtors are known to run hot. Also known to die without much encouragement. Not good.
55 is usually the limit but being mechanical components, the cooler the better.

Well I got 2 Seagates with 2 80mm fans blowing on em and they peak at 30 degrees under full load.

One HUGE thing I found to cool down HDD's is one of those HDD coolers (ones that fix to the bottom of the HDD). I've got one for other pc.

Normal temps before cooler - 45-50
With cooler 30-35

Was damn pleased

Another side effect of them is that they'll cool down 2 drives at once

OT a bit, but your SCSI drives; how big are they and how much faster are they than a single drive in general use?
