hdd upgrage

do i need to back up my hdd if i want to upgrade it and how would i go about this

Why do you want to upgrade? For speed or space? I doubt you'd see much speed difference unless you went for a new and expensive SSD. If it's more space you want you could just add the new drive into your system and it will just just up as an extra drive, no need to backup, reinstall anything.

you should be backing up anyway.

if i were to upgrade an OS drive i would do a fresh install rather than transfer the original install. in that case i would save all important data and everything i wanted to keep into a certain folder (say C:\backup), take it out put the new one in and install the OS. then i would just put the old drive in an external case, connect it by USB and copy the data accross

alternativly you could use something like acronis to transfer the partition to the new drive

Or use a tool that will backup the old HDD onto an img. Pop in the new hdd, restore the image and viola... it's like you've never swapped the hdd!

I know it says seagate, but it works for all hdds. I've used it on all the major hdd brands.
