HDDs keep disconnecting

I think I'm at the end of my tether with this, so any advice gratefully received.

I've got a media server with 4x 1TB HDDs (two Samsung and two Toshiba).

One of the Toshiba drives kept randomly disconnecting during the night, and the only way to get the drive running again would be to disconnect the SATA power cable and reconnect. It would then fire up fine and files would be accessible again.

I checked the SMART data and no issues to report. Suspecting the PSU (an old 300W Fractal ITX one), I swapped it out for a Silverstone Gold 500W SFX-L, but had to use an old spare SATA power cable. The problem went away for around a month, until I opened the case to dust it out.

Then the issue returned. No matter what I did with cable repositioning it still happened. Only ever one of the Toshiba drives (can't be certain it was the same one, as they're running together as a dynamic drive in Windows Home Server). Restarting the server didn't help either.

Therefore, I decided to do what I'd been planning for a while - upgrading the server from Llano to Skylake, including an M2 SSD for the OS (previously running on a partition of one of the Samsung drives). Due to complex issues surrounding USB3 and installation of Windows 7 based software, I had to change the OS to Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2, which went smoothly enough - the dynamic drive being recognised ok, and all files being accessible.

The next morning, I found that all the drives (except the M2) had disconnected. Thinking I'd found the culprit, I ordered a new PSU cable, made by Silverstone, and installed that yesterday. Upon checking today, I find that one of the Toshiba drives has disconnected again (now I've got RST it's much easier to check).

Having now replaced:
  • the PSU
  • the motherboard
  • operating system
  • the power cables
  • the SATA data cables

Is there anything else to try, except simply replacing the disk? They're only about 6 months old (unlike the Samsungs which have been going for about 3 years so far, and were second hand to begin with).

Have you tried moving the toshiba drive incase its shorting? Are you sure its just not spinning down cause its not being used? Contact toshiba see if its a firmware issue?

Stelly
