so i got a new card today a HD6870, finally got it working and now im looking into this hdmi audio, the problem is that the audio will only carry accross if i set it as default and i want it so it outputs through both HDMI and 'speakers'

and on an unrelated note i had problems when installing this card, the pc would start up to the windows logo screen and after that i just got a blank screen then after about 2 restarts it wouldn't even get past the post screen with the mobo giving me a post code of '75' which isn't in my manual so in the end i had too reset the cmos and it was ok after that and i just want to know is this normal for a GPU swapover? its never happened before..
my mobo is the jw-ip35-pro and the old card is the GTS250, only think i can think of is that it didn't like switching from nvidia to ati
another question: would is be wise to reinstall windows after having this happen?

Not possible. The 'Protected Audio Path' prevents it.

Why would you want both anyway?

There are ways around it, but it usually involves buying some extra kit and depends on the situation.

If it's just that you want TV sound only when you watch TV and speakers when you want Monitor then you can set the HDMI as default and disable the TV output when you are not using it.

I've accomplished this with UltraMon scripts which when I run a shortcut it enables/disables as appropriate and the sound switches as soon as it sees the TV in use.

If you want TV and speakers at the same time then I'd imagine you could use the TV sound output to speakers but you'd need to swap cables.

Or you could use a audio splitter and output sound to your TV via it's PC sound input and to the speakers at the same time. Splitting audio signals isn't perfect though.

I use Soundswitch to quickly change between speakers and TV audio. Add it to startup, select the tray icon to always show and then just click the icon to switch between them. Simples. It won't allow you to play both at the same time but it's a good alternative.

When you say you 'switched' graphics card from nvidia to AMD did you just take out the old card and put in the new one or did you uninstall the old graphics card and drivers in the control panel switch off the PC then take out the old one, put in the new one, switch PC on , install graphics drivers for new card.

I use something similar so that I can switch between the HDMI output to the amp and my gaming headphones. It's mapped to a button on my remote so that I can do it lazily from my arm chair. :D
