Does anybody have one of these? If so what is the quality like on them? Are they better when playing DVDs? Whats your opinions on them?

I have a Philips HDMI player. I found the image quality to be no different than using component out on the same player. It does let you upscale as well, but again, I didn't really notice any difference in quality. Maybe if I had a bigger screen it would be more noticeable. It probably depends on the player as well, but in my experience at least, HDMI offers no significant image improvement over component out.

On the plus side - it's very nice to be able to get rid of all the chunky video and audio cables and have just one cable doing everything instead.

I guess part of this depends upon the panel as well.

I've seen posts on AV forums recently suggesting that some TVs do a better job of scaling that a lot of upscaling DVD players. It depends how much you spent on the panel and how much you're spending on the DVD player (or other upscaling output).

I have a Phillips DVP5980 and realise it's pretty pointless for 720p screens, it can't upscale to the panel's native res so in the end you've got two pieces of hardware upscaling the image.

I have a Denon DVD-2930 that upscales my SD DVDs to 1080p. Only used the component on it when I first got it while waiting for my HDMI cable and I would certainly say that I prefer the DVD players scaling over HDMI than using my sets scaling on its component input :)

As others have said though, it depends really how much you are prepared to spend on the DVD player and also the quality of your panel will be a big factor.

Depending on your budget the Denon DVD-1930/40 gets excellent reviews.
