Hi guys, i have an hdmi output on my mobo, (gigabyte 785gt) and i plug it into my samsung tv and nothing happens? what is it there for and how do i use it? help would be appreciated, cheers xx

When using your pc are you using the onboard gpu or an external gpu.

Does the tv automatically go to the HDMI port in use - stating obvious but thought I check :)

hi, ive got an amd phenomll 955be processor, gigabyte785gt mobo, 3gb kingstone hyper-x ram, 8800gt alpha dog gpu, antec 550w basiq psu, dont know what else u need to know lol, yes i have got the up to date drivers (i think). and to answer your question RJC, yes whenever i plug a hdmi connection in it shows up on my source list.

if memory serves the onboard video outs are disabled when using an aftermarket graphics card ;) remove the card and try then

is their any way i could do it without taking the card out? be a bit of a pain. i know i could just use the gpu to go straight to the tv but as i have an hdmi port i thought i could use that instead.

In that case your onboard graphics card (the one the HDMI cable is plugged into) is being disabled by the presence of the 8800GT graphics card.

To get the PC working with the TV you will either have to plug the TV into the 8800GT (either using a DVI-D to HDMI adapter like this, or a DVI to HDMI cable like this) or remove the graphics card and keep the HDMI cable plugged into the motherboard.

if you plan to run it using the 8800GT you will have to ensure that the S/PDIF cable is installed from the motherboard to the graphics card if you want sound to be transferred from the PC to the TV via the HDMI connection.

unless there is a bios option to maybe select the primary output device to the onboard, I think your out of luck.

If the graphic card has Dvi outputs, then you can just buy a dvi to hdmi adapter for it. you wont notice the difference.

correct me if i am wrong but doesn't dvi carry no sound where hdmi does?

You are indeed correct, however if you get a DVI-D to HDMI adapter which allows sound pass-through (like the ones that usually come with the graphics card) then the sound will be passed through to an attached HDMI cable and onto the TV. However, this also requires the connection of the motherboard S/PDIF to the graphics card as shown here.
