hdmi overscan problem

So i have my 7870 connected to my TV through hdmi and it gives a black border around the edge, easily fixed through the amd catalyst control centre by setting overscan to 0

However whenever i play a game the black border returns, i followed this guide http://www.ryukent.com/2011/01/black-border-problem-using-hmdi-overscan-underscan-with-amd-card/ but it still shows a black border in games.

Anyone got a fix for this as its driving me crazy, i have been changing settings for 3 days now and nothing seems to work

Have you tried altering the aspect ratio via the tv remote?

Yeah i can do that it zooms in a little bit but still leaves a small border, its a workaround but its not ideal, when i exit out of games all my icons are off screen and i have to change it again.

Whats the make and model of your TV?

I had this same issue when on my Plasma TV when I had the PC hooked up to it.

turns out that I had 16:9 Overscan turned 'on' in the Advanced settings of Picture settings on in My TV's Menu (Panasonic).

turn Overscan off on your TV if you have the option and it should sort the issue out.

There's a thread on Tom's Hardware that might be useful to you. It fixed my issue with the display driver defaulting to 10% underscan on every reboot.

My TV is a panasonic TX-P50G20BA, i checked the overscan in the menu and it is turned off, reading through the link now, not sure if i want to mess with registry keys, don't really now how lol

My philips monitor does this too. I had to set my overscan to 0 in CCC with my 7870. Even now, when I boot up to windows, I have the boarders, but then after 30 seconds or so CCC 'remembers' I set the overscan to 0 and the boarders vanish. Some games have the boarders because they're at 50hz (I used to have my monitor work at 50hz because my old graphics card was struggling to reach 60fps in most games, but 50 was fine, for vsync), so I change the hz in CCC to 50 and then boot up the game, no boarders, and then set it back to 60 and then boot up the game... I fixed it with a lot of faffing around in CCC basically. I used the same guide as you and it didnt help. I had to change the res/hz in CCC and apply overscan. If I can work out the exact procedure to getting rid of the boarders I'll let you know!

Just out of interest, are you using a DVI port on your tv? Even if it is an HDMI socket, some tv only have one PC- enabled HDMI port or something. I used a DVI - HDMI cable on my old tv, and only one HDMI port would display the PC res 1366*768 properly. The other port preferred true 720p, and gave me boarders at 1366*768...

I have tried all the HDMI ports on the TV, black borders with all of them, the TV has a VGA socket, this shows full screen in games but it is very low res.

Do you think this cable might fix the problem, i am getting very annoyed now lol

I doubt it, as I am still using my DVI to HDMI and still get the problems. It actually might be why I get the problems, I hadn't thought of that...

What do you mean the VGA is low res? VGA can do 1080p, I'm guessing your TV is 1080p or lower? Your TV won't accept all the resolutions that HDMI can do, it will be specific ones. usually 800*600, 1024*768, 1152*something, 1366*768, 1600x900 maybe, 1920*1080.

When i use the VGA cable the res won't go above 1024x768, i just tried it on my samsung wich is downstairs and that does run in 1080p through the VGA cable, with no black borders, but thats not the TV i want to use lol
