Hey everyone,

Looking at my first home cinema setup and trying to decide best system. I've a 42" plasma at the moment, but plan to get a projector early next year. This is the dilemma. All the reviews seem to point to Onkyo being a great make for a first setup and the 609 and 709 seem to do everything I need. However the 609 only has one HDMI output. Now should I settle for this and get a splitter when I get the projector? Or is it worth the extra £300 or so to get the 709 and the extra output? I can't see that the 709 has that much more to offer? Any other amp suggestions also welcome!

Any speaker recommendations? Kef any good? Someone recommended tannoy?

The inputs for the amp will be a Xbox 360, WDTV live and a Virgin Tivo. I'll be getting a bluray player or maybe Ps3 as well.

Onkyo is good gear, but not the only show in town when it comes to amps with dual outputs. The Yamaha range includes some suitable products too. The RXV-771 is current, price circa £650. The 767 is available for £460. The RXV2067 - if you can live with Titanium rather than black - £650 if you Google.

Speakers: a lot depends on your room and how large/small the speakers have to be to fit in. Also of course the budget. Be a little more specific about your requirements and restrictions and then you have a better chance of getting some meaningful suggestions. :)

3067 is only £100 more and available in black ;)

Thanks for the replies! Had a look at the Yamahas mentioned, the 771 seems to be worse then Onkyo 609 in pretty much everything other then having another hdmi out? Also the 3067 seems to be discontinued? and was £1500 anyway!

For the amp not looking to spend more then 800, speakers around 500 or so. The question regarding the splitter or 2 output was a more general question. Is it better to have an amp with 2 outputs? or does it not matter and its fine to use a splitter?

Don't be fooled because it's discontinued; it's a very, very good amp, many inputs, supports HDMI 1.4 and very good internals. A wide range of options for customisation as well.

If I were you I would put it on your final list for contention, and like you say it was a £1,500 amp. It's "replacement", the RX-A3010 is £2,000. It's definately above the 609, and leagues ahead of the 771.

Splitters work fine, as long as they are powered, but if you are willing to pay £800 for an amp, may as well do it properly than fudge it.

You have to also think about what speakers as well as certain brands go well with particular AV brands.
