As the title really. I just got myself a 19" HD ready LCD TV for the bedroom and want to be able to take the old PS3 up on occasion but it doesn't have an HDMI input. The guy in my local RadioCrap says that DVI carries audio as well as video so I want to know if he is right, in which case I will keep hold of the set or wether I should take it back and swap it at the high street catalogue shop where I bought it?

he said if it's DVI-D then it carries audio as it has extra pins!!! just goes to show that people who work in the stores talk out of their A-holes.

The extra pins in DVI-D are for increased graphics bandwidth. IIRC, the single-link DVI cables maximum res is 1920x1200. If you have a bigger monitor with a res of 2560*1600 then you will need the extra pins in the dual-link.

dvi has never carried audio.

dvi-a = analogue only
dvi-d = digital only
dvi-i = analogue + digital.

dvi-d does not mean dual link (the extra bandwidth ic1male was refering to). dual link is dvi-i with all pins in use. Also known as dvi-DL (dual link)

Guys how are you getting sound when using HDMI then on the PS3?

I see you can have the normal component cable plugged in as well as HDMI but I guess it wont let you use both, the only available way to have sound is through the digi output??

yup thats what im using:) hdmi > tv. optical > av/amp.

That's what the OP asked. You will need to plug in your composite lead and get the L-R stereo sound from the phono plugs or use an optical cable for Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.

Riiiiight, so to confirm.

I have a HDMI>DVI connection in the back of my TV from the PS3.

Can I also have the standard composite lead plugged in and that using sound?

Saves me a lot of hassle if so...!

On mine i use the HDMI for the picture and using the normal component AV connector i output the sound to my amp. When i get a chance i will get an amp with optical though much better sound and 5.1. You can select what to use to output the sound on the settings , ie HDMI, AV lead or optical.

Correct, that's how I do it.

i actually do something totally different

ive not got round to upgrading my TV yet, so its hooked up via the composite lead that comes with the PS3

i have however got round to installing a surround system with 5.1 receiver. So ive hooked that up for sound. So allthough video goes through the composite lead, sound goes through the optical lead

you can have any combination of audio / video through HDMI / composite / component / spdif.

I presume it's not possible to get an analog 5.1 out - so when I get a new monitor I'm going to need to get a 5.1 receiver of some sort so I can send the sound to my Creative G500s somehow

I don't want to have to have my PC on all the time to do it through my X-Fi
