HDMI to DVI-I on a non HDCP equipped Projector?

Hi all,
I joined this forum today in the hope I may get some assistance with this issue. Years ago I built my own home cinema, and kitted it out with the best gear I could afford at the time. I moved home and as my new home wasn't suitable for a cinema I boxed everything up and it stayed like that for many years!
I would now like to start using it again, and whilst things have moved on a fair bit, my gear was just too expensive and too good still to replace. I was using a Optima H56A DLP projector, which is still up there with the best re HD picture quality, but It was never built to support the HDCP protection built into HDMI devices. I remember trying to feed it a HDMI signal from A DVD player via a HDMI to DVI cable, and I got nothing because of the HDCP protection. The question is, as I now have bluray that only puts out a HDMI signal, can I connect this to the projector using Component in via the VGA socket on the projector? I really don't want to go buying more expensive leads and converters only to find out they won't work because my projector doesn't support HDCP.
Any help much appreciated,
Ian :)

I've checked the instructions on my blu-ray player and blu-ray will not output a full HD signal via analogue when a blu-ray disc is played.

As Grimley said, the Blu-ray player won't output the full HD goodness via anything other than HDMI for commercial discs.

The player reads the disc, and if it is content protected then the most it will allow via Component is 576p. The answer is a HDCP stripper. This adapter sits between the Blu-ray player's HDMI output and the projector's component input. It does two things. The first is that it makes the Blu-ray player think it is seeing a HDCP compatible display device. The second is to convert HDMI to analogue component at whatever resolution the Blu-ray is outputting.

The best known and most reliable solution is the HD Fury line of adapters. Fury 1 was the first widely available adapter. It worked well in the US market but there were some issues for us in the UK where HD includes 1080p/50Hz. Fury 2 solved those problems. That would be a good choice as a second-hand purchase. Fury 3 added some tweaks for better audio support and for multiple (2) HDMI sources. There's also a Fury 4 for those who need HD audio support and 3D. All Fury versions are current products in the US. The 1 & 2 versions simply got repositions on price as later products launched. Earlier versions of Furys use DVI because they support picture only. More info on Furys here

There are also cheap Chinese HDCP strippers. The results with these can be patchy. I went through several different products before finding a product that works well for my customers with CRT home cinema projectors. I bought a batch. These run at approx half the cost of a Fury 2 with the additional power supply.

Thank you guy's for your response, much appreciated! I will definitely look out for a fury 2, it sounds just the ticket. My projector has a native resolution of 1024 x 768. It'll be very interesting to see how it displays a modern bluray picture.
Thanks again,
Ian.

Help! I decided to spend £111 and buy a new HD Fury 2 from Amazon. I plugged it in and nothing! I'm using a Optima H56A DLP Projector that has DVI-I, VGA and S-video inputs. I plugged the HD Fury in to the VGA socket on the projector and after searching the projector says no signal. Do I need to get an adapter and plug the Fury in to the DVI-I socket, or should it really work through the VGA socket that it fits? Any help appreciated as I'm getting very frustrated with this, and I'm feeling a bit gutted I may have wasted a £100....

After playing about with it all night I've sort of managed to get it working. It came with no instructions what so ever, but I found the manual on line and it suggested reducing the sources output from 1080p to 1080i which I done and got a picture! However, the picture is unstable and flickers a lot and also drops out completely at times. I can't seem to find anyway of making it stable,......Any suggestions, or is it just not possible to get a Bluray player to work on this projector???

We could do with a little more detail about whe at you bought and how you have things set up. i.e Are you sure you got a genuine HD Fury II? How long is the HDMI cable, and have you tested that cable on any other display. Did you buy the 5V 500mA power supply? What breakout cable are you using (if any)? Is the Fury set to RGB or Component output. What input resolutions does your projector support with HDTV timings? What's happening with the blue status light (Off/flashing/on solid)?

Start off with the Blu-ray player set at 720p just for a test and, if possible, rig up a temporary test with a shorter HDMI cable.

Yes I'm pretty sure it is genuine, it came in retail packaging with the 2 supplied break out cables from Amazon. I bought a new 10M HDMI cable which I did initially think might be the problem, but tested it on a 0.5m cable with the same results. I'm using the power supply that came with it, which is a5v 1.0A supply that seems to work fine. The HD Fury 2 is plugged directly in to the projector with no break out cable in between, and is set to RGB.The projectors manual states it is 1024 x 768 and HDTV compatible. the blue status light is on constantly even when the picture is dropping out.

I've tried the projector on all the available Bluray resolution settings and get the following results;

1080p Nothing

1080i The sharpest picture, but unstable, flickering and dropping out. picture sets to 1920 x 1080 @60Hz

720p Nothing.

480p/576p Stable picture that delivers 720 x 576 @50Hz on a DVD disc, but drops to 640 x 480 @60Hz when a Bluray is played!

So although the Fury will allow the projector to display a HDMI image, It would seem it gives the best picture quality from a DVD disc as opposed to a Bluray disc.
I'm confused,....been out the game too long :)

Update: I've just plugged the end of the 10M HDMI cable in to my Xbox, reconfigured the Xbox to 1080i and played a HD movie from Netflix through it. It displays perfectly at 1080i through the projector! So whats the problem with the Bluray player???

And further update,.....It may be some sort of hand shake problem going on here, as the films through Netflix seem to play for around 20 mins before stopping with an error message appearing saying something about there appears to be a problem with the display. Also I have noticed a fine occasional shimmer go down the image in 1080i

It would appear the best I can get out of this projector without any problems is 720 x 576 with a DVD source, in which case I could have got that straight from the component outs of a DVD player. It seems to be useless for playing Bluray or HD streamed movies....Very frustrating!,......Anyone want to buy a HD Fury 2 :p

Yes I did try that and it doesn't out put a signal. I have continued to play around with this this afternoon, and when going into the Xbox settings a second time I found HDTV settings that I'm sure didn't show on the list the first time. These were 1024 x 768 and 1280 x 1024.
1024 is the projectors native resolution, so I set the Xbox to this and it played a movie from Netflix with a perfect picture, no shimmer and no dropping out or being stopped by Netflix. 1280 was producing the same drop outs and shimmer, so I'm guessing the projector is too old to play today's HD even though the Fury is trying to give it to it. The hand shake problems may be being caused by the constant drop outs which I believe may be due to the projector struggling to except too high a resolution.
What I seem to have is A DVD picture at 720 x 576 that plays well through the Bluray player. DVD is very sharp through the Xbox at 1024, but the shimmering is too annoying as the projector tries to upscale fast moving images.
I have a great picture at 1024 through the Xbox for streaming movies, and BBC iplayer looks great through the Bluray. The only thing I can't really play is Bluray discs, as they just look awful when they get scaled down to 480p. The projector, although it claims to be capable of a 1080i resolution, wont play the Blurays at this for some reason. I'm happy with everything else now though :)

I had a Pioneer Plasma pre HDMI days and that only handled 720p at 60Hz. Not a problem for my DivX media player but an issue else where. Nothing similar happening here is there?

I really don't Know what the issue is. The projector manual says it's True XGA 1024 x 768 addressable pixels, and that it is HDTV compatible with 480p, 576p, 1080i, and 720p But it wont except a 720p signal from the xbox or the bluray through the Fury.
