HDMI vs DVI.

I need to longer DVI cable as the one supplied with my monitor is not long enough so I need to order another one.

The graphics card has a DVI output but not HDMI, it came with a DVI to HDMI adaptor.

So my question is what would be better, HDMI via DVI adaptor or just a longer DVI-D lead.

i asked about dvi/hdmi/vga differences a while back and the general concensus was there is little difference between dvi and hdmi so get whichever is cheapest
 
i have a question about HDMI carrying sound, my GTS250 has a HDMI port and i noticed the card came with a 2 pin connector but i didn't know what this was for so i didn't use it :) i havn't used the HDMI port yet as i don't have a cable for it but i am wondering how does the graphics card carry sound through? is it that 2 pin?
 
yes it's that 2 pin connector, you need to connect it to the spdif out connector on your motherboard or soundcard.

and i would recommend to the op to buy the best cable you can afford, i use a qed dvi cable and noticed a great improvement in the picture when i switched from the one that came with my nec monitor.

Careful what you say, what you've said about improved picture from a branded digital cable is highly flammable xD


In my opinion getting the DVI cable would be better, at least that way you won't end up with a useless cable by the looks of things, ie new HDMI specs coming along and making you cable worth less.
 
i am stating from personal experience that the picture on my monitor improved in my eyes when i switched from the cable that came with it to the qed cable so i don't think i need to be careful about that :)

and the qed cable was only a tenner anyway so its not like i'm telling him to go out and spend a fortune :)

Who could justify spending close to £100 on a cable lol.

yes I know what £10 is...

I'm referring to cables that are made by a certain company and are in certain stores, that entertainment magazines tend to recommend... that supposedly make a big difference.

Well if it's a DVI cable and it costs 100 it better do the washing and cook dinner for me as well.

I could definitely justify 10 for a good quality cable/leader tho : ). Haven't seen one for 100 yet ... I'd smash the salesperson head against the wall if I've seen one in shop.
 
You can pick up decent spec Monster brand shielded/braided DVI to HDMI cables on fleabay for a tenner. I replaced the thin unshielded DVI/DVI cable that came with my Hazro, can't really tell if its made a difference, a digital signal is a digital signal.
 
Expensive hdmi or dvi cables is a false economy! There's been countless tests that show thre is no difference in expensive and cheap cables unless the length is ridiculously long, like 20 meteres + !!! A digital signal is a digital signal.

i've seen dvi cables up to £430 and hdmi cables up to £2000 :eek:
