Hi guys, I have a 295 card and a 40" HD samsung lcd.

I am currently connecting using a DVI to VGA convertor and using the VGA socket on my TV/monitor.

Would it pay me to invest in a good quality HDMI cable and make use of the HDMI socket on my card or would the difference be negligable?

Many Thanks

Marv

Think it depends on the length of cable you need. I would say, 1 or 2 meters get a cheap one. 5m and over, get a quality one.

Yeh, it's about 2 metres but do you think using the HDMI cable instead of the DVI to VGA cable I am currently using would be give a better quality picture in gaming etc. i.e. on crysis

*Bump* anyone had any experience of this?
I could just try it and see but HDMI cables can be expensive and I dont want to wast my money :)

Just get a cheap HDMI cable, at short lengths the quality of the cable makes bugger all difference.

LOL, you guys are not getting what I am asking :D

I'll rephrase the question.

Will using a HDMI cable from my Nvidia 295 graphics card to my LCD TV be better than the current set up of DVI to VGA convertor to VGA input on my LCD TV?

I am playing world at war and crysis not playing bluray films or anything :p

think it depends on whats the max resolution your tv's vga/dvi port can handle.

like on my toshiba regza 42" the vga port wont go over 1280 i think it was, but through the hdmi port on the tv i get the full 1920x1080 that its capable of.

i'd say go for a good quality HDMI for sure, much better than a VGA lead. Plus you get sound and picture via the same lead.
Much less hassle i've found using HDMI out.

It will make more of a difference for static-ish images than games/movies, you tend not to notice the image noise when there's a bit of movement. Just get a cheap cable and be done with it TBH.

And like the above poster said your VGA port might be limited to 720p (or 768p) anyway, I get the same thing on my projector :(

Hi Guys, just thought it might be useful to someone in the future if I finished this thread off.

I've got my HDMI cable and connected my 40" samsung tele to my nvidia 295 graphics card using it.

Unfortunatly, the results werent good. So I've gone back to the DVI to vga cable :)

No harm done though, only £14.00 so no biggy.

I suspect the TV recognises that the signal is from a PC so limits it to the PC resolution.
My Panasonic Plasma has a listing of accepted resolutions in the back.. The PC resolutions are different.

Care to elaborate a bit more on why it isn't so good? Cause just saying the results weren't good doesn't exactly help at all.

Perhaps you need to configure some settings on the graphics driver control panel?

Sometimes if your TV has multiple HDMI ports, it could also depend on whichever one you have connected it to.

It could also depend on if your TV is True 1080p HD cause resolutions would be different on either VGA or HDMI.

This is the TV I'm using http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/detail/detail.do?group=television&type=television&subtype=tftlcd&model_cd=LE40A656A1FXXU

Its native resolution is 1920 x 1080 and that is what it runs at when connected using my DVI to VGA cable. It looks fine as well. Lovely in fact :)

Using the HDMI cable though I get the following:

When I connect to HDMI 1 which is one of the general ports the picture looks grainy.

When I connect to HDMI 2 which is the one reccommended for DVI to HDMI set ups it looks exactly the same, grainy.

I have been through all the nvidia control panel settings and couldnt find or change anything that improved it.

I didn't take a screen shot so unfortunatly have nothing to show you guys.

Have one of you got this type of set up working then with a HDMI cable from a 295 card?

Very strange. In both setups, the same DVI output is being used - it's just the cable that is different. Logic dictates that either the cable is the problem or the TV doesn't like the digital signal?

I've looked at the manual for your TV and on page 46 it does show slightly different frequency settings between the DSub and HDMI input. If I remember correctly, you can set these values in the Nvidia control panel if you set up a custom resolution.

Try that...

Hmm, I'll have another play at the weekend, thnx for that.

Just want to clear something up though, the current set up is using a Cable that has a DVI connection at one end and a VGA the other.

The HDMI cable is HDMI at both ends and plugs into a HDMI socket that the Nvidia 295 card has in addition to the two DVI sockets :p

Could you try a cable that has a DVI connection at one end and HDMI at the other.
It could be something to do with the audio signal interfering with the video signal, this way it will just be a pure video signal.
