I been really looking forward to buying an HDR monitor but after seeing this side by side I kinda lost some hype :(
Seems like he says maybe HDR gaming just in't ready yet and the content from the Devs can make it look worst. Here was me thinking the user would have full control over the HDR picture settings? Seems that isn't the case and the final HDR image is out of the box for each game.

I'm aware of what HDR does :D but several HDR demos I've seen looked like they had limited range RGB set on the input as well (and then HDR working on top of that rather than a full range source) :| not sure if it was rookie error or something else.

If HDR was working properly you shouldn't get that loss of detail in dark areas, etc. it should look darker but with good retention of detail and retain a good roll off to lighter areas.

Also very bad Nvidia very Bad

nVidia in treating their customers with contempt shocker.

No surprises there..... I wouldn't say that it was just nvidia though but also the monitor manufacturers.

As for HDR itself, HDR looks more "realistic/natural" there imo. May not look as nice in terms of colours but give me accuracy over, over exposed areas etc.

Either way, personally I don't think we are going to get good results from a "monitor" for HDR any time soon, as shown constantly over the last 5+ years now, monitor manufacturers don't care about the monitor market as it is too small and not worth worrying about and so far HDR monitors haven't looked very promising, especially the IPS versions.

Also, I am still concerned about the brightness for HDR especially on a monitor where you are sitting pretty close, anything higher than 100 luminace strains my eyes out so bad let alone current monitor max brightness of around 400/500 luminace, I dread to imagine what it will be like with anything close to 1000......

Not to mention, as the guy said, developers etc. will have to specially develop games etc. in order to get the best from HDR and I'm not 100% sure but I imagine that this will be very hard to get done right if you have various different types of HDR monitors out there i.e. ones using IPS then others using VA etc. and not forgetting the HDR TVs which will be far superior than any HDR monitor so yeah most of the optimization will probably be done with consoles and HDR TVs in mind.

Either way, this is where I would much rather just have OLED over any HDR LCD panel, will be far superior still.

EDIT:

Also, don't forget we are viewing this on basic TN/IPS/VA monitors and through youtube.

Wouldn't say realistic, look at the part the car is on the sand and the sun is casting over. The sand on the left is doing what you would expect from direct sun light, where on the right the HDR looks like they isnt any sun in the image and the sand looks dull.
Will need to see more side by side but so far HDR in gaming might be a flop might be abit early call that one like. Am hoping I wrong HDR is something I want in a new monitor and the idea is very good.

No doubt the detail under/at the back of the car is being crushed but in terms of the rest of the picture, in comparison the SDR just looks over exposed/overly vibrant/saturated, the HDR monitor definitely gives me the impression of more of an alien life like planet in a more natural view.

But again, we are viewing this through youtube and on basic monitors so we won't be getting a true sense of what the picture was like, especially for the HDR monitor.

Also, didn't the guy say that he just set everything back to factory reset settings? Awful idea, if you want to do a like for like, you need to properly hardware calibrate "both" monitors. Out of the box monitor settings are atrocious, especially for brightness settings....

My monitor even though it’s something like 7 years old does 10bit colour output. Doesn’t that mean I am already getting the main benefit of HDR which is the enhanced colour range and so there is no point in upgrading? Wouldn't a 10bit colour range monitor show main difference between SDR and HDR?

There is far more to HDR than just the colour bit depth:

Difficult to tell looking at it on our monitors and the screens not being calbrated but from that video, I much prefer the HDR screen. More natural looking.

There is no doubt that when HDR is done correct, it is far better than a resolution upgrade. The problem as pointed out is making SDR look far worse than it is, in order for people to say "wow what a difference, I must upgrade now!!!". Done to drive says, well done on the video for them pointing this out.

It's happening all the time, I keep seeing side by side comparison where I think just turn the brightness up a bit cause they try to tweak it down as this proves, I bet Hardware Canucks don't get a card from Nvidia this Christmas though. :)

Compared to games on regular monitors HDR monitors may require changes in how a game does lighting etc for them to benefit.

My favorite is still asus's 1080 VS 1440 diagram

Yep, it was rigged. I think I was the one that brought it up to shanks attention in the Vega thread :)

Nvidia up to their usual antics again. Cannot say I am surprised one bit. It goes to show that these HDR monitors are nothing much special when a company resorts to doing this.

I will be waiting for an OLED screen with proper HDR in a few years time, by then there maybe be actual games that make good use of it.

You wrong :p I already created this before went into that thread. I follow this channel.

Yeah when AMD do something bad, they get slagged to absolute buggery, and boycotted, but when Nvidia do it, they get praised to high heaven, and even more money flung at em. :D
