If you read Cykeys guide in post number 2 it basically explains that there are 2 ways to make a HDR image, one is from 3 shots taken of the same scene but with different exposures or photomatix can also make HDRs out of single RAW files as well. For best results you want 3 shots, -2, 0, +2.
You can also make them from jpegs but often the results are pretty poor.
I have never really got to grips with HDR, I dont try it very often but those that I have done wouldnt touch a lot of the stuff you see on here.
