Hi all,

Just been reading about HDR10+, man these HDR different certifications are a mess.

How concerned would you be if buying one of the new wave of tvs shown at CES, if it did not have Dolby vision or HDR10+?

There always seems to be something to wait for, I am a bit apprehensive about getting aboard the HDR tvs and picking the wrong format for the future.

i think you will find most now support them all bar the new hdr10+.
AS in dolby digital most are now supporting via firmware updates later in the year. i think it is indeed turning into a format war

I wouldn't worry too much. All UHD will always support the basic HDR10 category so you'll still be able to watch movies in HDR, HDR10+ is similar to Dolby Vision in that the brightness can differ scene to scene.

don't think my TV (panasonic dx 902) is getting Dolby vision , but i'm not bothered it looks fantastic in HDR and HLG

I do love the constant recommendation for OLED screens. Yes, we all know how amazing they are. But when there is a £400 premium for OLED over high-end LCD and £500+ premium over mid-range LCD - these are not viable for a lot of people.

Yeah for me paying around £1000 for a DX902B was really pushing my budget to the max. Everyone says get an LG OLED for £1500 but thats a significant amount of money for a TV. I appreciate the quality of the picture but its a big cost.

i would say you have the better TV , i paid double that for mine , and still think i have the better TV

I paid £900 for my OLED screen - I just bought secondhand. It still has 5 years left on the transferable warranty and it had been professionally calibrated.

Paying £1000 for an LED screen just because it is new, is madness to me when there's always a bargain to be had on the secondhand market.

be mindful your room may have a detrimental impact on the calibration :)

agree
I think the battle is how the tv maps the the HDR material within the brightness capabilities of the screen (see Vincent's discussion on the Sony/Pan/LG implementation using the same LG oled panel) or has fast enough processing to establish the scene to scene brightness itself.

not sure if there is also an LG outlet store too ? Both Sony and Pan stores have had previous links, and I woudl use Pan one again

Cognitive dissonance ? refers to a situation involving conflicting attitudes, beliefs or behaviors. This produces a feeling of discomfort leading to an alteration in one of the attitudes, beliefs or behaviors to reduce the discomfort and restore balance, etc.

I think people on this forum are quick to say "get an OLED" when in actual fact it's not necessarily always the perfect technology. I'm not saying that OLED doesn't have positives, but find me a TV that is similar to my ZD9 in terms of peak brightness, lack of image retention and ability to handle motion without using processing features.

There is no doubt OLED is good at blacks and displaying vibrant colours (although vibrant colours are not always a good thing) but I'd rather have my high end, high brightness LED thank you very much!

Im not sure if that's having a "pop" or not , I've googled it and still cant work it out :D

If people are looking for TV's now is not the time to buy. Wait until Spring, at this point all of the 2017 models go into freefall as they make room for the 2018's.
Personally I'm watching the LG B7 & C7 as well as the Sony XE9005 (55" version) to see which hits my budget around March/April time.

I have to agree with this after dumping my 6 month old Samsung and getting a 75 ZD9. Wait to see what the DV update will bring.

I'm intrigued by the DV update but I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that us ZD9 owners won't see much difference because I've read that most HDR content is mastered at 1,000 nits and our sets are capable of producing 1,500+ nits of peak brightness.

some of the uhd discs HDR10 streams are mastered to higher levels (below), you can see the info on a ub900.
so you could already be benfitting with the 1500 nits on the ZD9,

with dv up to 10k nits maybe the discs+streaming services will make even more use of the zd9's nits
(have not looked to see if soemone did a comparison of dv&hdr10 images from same disc)

back on oled tech, some very interesting comments/theories on the 2018's
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/40-ol...d-tvs-technology-advancements-thread-483.html

Here is a direct comparison of the pixels size : (2017 vs 2018 at approximately the same scale ):
(Some calculation :
Area increase for Green : + 25% ,
Red : + 60% ,
Blue : something like +10% ,
White : +17% )
actions speak louder than words ? - pop

The ZD9 can do 1900 nits. As for the update for DV, it will be interesting to see what it's like on a LCD.

Don't ever go look at them side by side. Your wallet will thank me :)

I went in to a local TV shop, a year and half ago to buy a 4K TV within a very definite set budget and I came out with a 1080P OLED way above my budget. I have not regretted the purchase at all.

I'd love to take the OLED route, the LG B7/C7 seem like great pieces of kit. But, it's a £500+ premium.
Sure, an occasional deal pops up, but generally the difference between those high-end LCD's and the OLED's is around £500.
Come March/April when everywhere starts to shift the 2017 models to make room for the 2018's I'm hoping there might be some deals to be had. If I can get into OLED (55") for around the £1k mark then I'll probably take a look.
But with that being my top-end budget, I can see my first move into larger screens (40" & 42" is where I've been in the past) will probably be LCD (Sony XE9005 looking favourite) and my move to OLED will be once they are mainstream a few years down the line.
