Its my birthday next month and I was pretty fixed on getting a new camera, but my missus has suggested maybe a 32" HDTV - the thing is I am not sure I need one!
I have a media center PC, its my stereo, TV, DVD and PVR all in one and I am currently on a Dell 20" LCD which although smallish, does us fine for now. I have 3 TV cards and Cable TV connected via composite and then DVI to the monitor.

I dont think I need a HDTV as my monitor is completely capable of Hi Def resolutions, if anything, I think I would be better off getting maybe a 30" LCD?

Just wanting advice based on my setup, is there any point to me getting a HDTV, wouldn't an larger LCD give me just as good a picture? I have everything I need in my PC - I presume, I dont know, these are just presumptions that I have always had....

Please correct me if I am wrong..

LCD is a subset of HDTV. Just you get LCDs for PC (High maximum res, anything from 1024 x 768 up to 2560 x 1600) and LCDs which could be described as HDTVs (i.e. have a res of 1366 x 768 -720p or full HD 1920 x 1080 - 1080p). Plasma screens would also be called HDTVs and like their LCD counterparts share the same resolutions.
Which one would be most suitable for you depends on what you are going to use it for, viewing distances, budget and so on. So a bit more information is required.

do u watch movies on your 20" lcd ?
if so then the 32" lcd would be certainly worth it....the bigger the better tbh.

make your missus happy and go for the 32" lcd:p.

if possible try and view the lcd in action before buying though....i bought one a few weeks ago(cheap one) and the colours were a joke...it looked nasty.

i ended up taking it back the next day and buying a bigger screen 4 times the price which i seen in action.....i may not have spent so much had the 32" not been so nasty .

A 32" LCD will give you a worse picture than your 20" Dell, but for movies/tv shows it won't matter but the desktop/web browsing will be noticeably worse due to 1360x768 res on the TV.

Up to you ultimately! Perhaps use the Dell for general use as a primary screen and have the TV plugged in as a secondary, then you can just use the tele for watching films and have the Dell for web browsing/desktop use/whatever!

Cheers for the advice guys and to answer a couple of questions..

I do not use my media centre as a computer, only for home entertainment
My viewing distance is about 8ft
The monitor will only be used for Blue Ray movies, TV, DVD's etc

So I am correct in thinking that I don't need a TV, just a larger monitor?
Now I have to choose between a Canon G9 or a 32" LCD:D

Off to look at the OCUK range for pricing - I love birthdays!
