Hello all,

Looking to get a headtorch from santa for around a £30 budget.

I currently use an Ultrafire torch (was around £10 from dealextreme a few years ago) and a cheap supermarket headtorch. I find the headtorch gets used more than the torch, as it's more practical, however, it sucks :p

Currently looking at the LED Lenser H7R; any other recommendations?

Will be used for camping, hiking etc and I hope will last at least a weekend fully charged (12hrs?)

I've always been impressed by DX, probably just look whats on there and buy 2 in case one breaks, will still be cheaper and better than what you can source from the uk.

Alpkit Gamma or Manta for half your budget.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've had a look and a lot of the search results for both together (to compare) are people upgrading from the Gamma to the H7 and being impressed. Though it's a little more money, I'm still leaning towards the HD7R. I think the extra power will come in handy when looking for that elusive stile in the dark etc.

I bought my last torch form DX, but I'm thinking of going for something slightly better quality this time.

Petzl Tikka2

Like maglite, I've never been impressed with Petzl torches.

As previously suggested, the Alpkit Gamma is very good - use mine for road running, so the rear red light is handy. Gets a lot of use for general household tasks too - taking the bins out and getting firewood in etc.

I'm quite fond of my petzl tactikka XP, nice and compact with respectable battery life. It's great for night walking and short distance work, but did a few night climbs with it last month and found it a bit lacking in brightness. Keep having bad thoughts about a myo or similar but don't have the money!
