I apologise for asking a noob style question, I'm not one generally, but 3d is an area i know nothing about....

Ok I built my system last year, all bought from OCuk and I'm a happy bunny, till now...

When I bought this, I had *NEVER* played a game on a pc since xp came out, not counting freecell....

hell i had an xbox(for my sons) and a ps3(they wanted one) and never used those, in a year of ps3 ownership i bet its not had me use it 5 hours!
(and at least 2 of them was a blu ray movie)

Now, things have changed, my younger son introduced me to command and conquer red alert, and that was it, I'm into gaming now, starting at the bottom but still its a start

so, I got stronghold legends, that was the start of a problem, my card is slow....

I bought a 3450, based on my machine being mainly a htpc, so dvd playback at HD and low power consumption was the criteria, and cost a major factor.

So, I'm wanting to go up a fair few notches, I've seen on the ati site this card has something called 40 pipelines, meaningless to my electronics background so i'm guessing the more it has the quicker it can do the 3d math?

in which case I'm looking at the 4650 with its 320, thinking that may be enough, I see their best has 800, so its halfway.

Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

What I want is...

Low power consumption in windows

HD output on hdmi or dvi<>hdmi

'decent' 3d gameplay for car games and a few shoot em ups

Preferbly not a stonking jet engine fan on it....

A budget thats very very limited so older models would be ok, esp if i can maybe source a 'b' grade or used item, trying to ballpark in the 50-70ukp market, bottom end would be better lol. but i'm not going to be that strict if it means going an extra few quid to get much more.

I'm not expecting to move upto super speeds, but just a little less 3d stuttering for the next year...

Oh my spec forgot!

800w psu
q6600 2.4 (wont OC despite being a gteed 3g one?)
4gb ddr2 1066 ocz stuff
gigabyte ga35pds3r
loads of sata drives
few ide drives
3010ix tuner card
ati 3450 512mb (hdmi sound has never worked)
Imon ultrabay (Dont buy one)

lots of slow fans to keep air moving

OS: currently win7.64bit

You could try and see if you could get a second-hand 8800GT - that should

Thanks, I was just offered one locally by someone who is upgrading, may be quite cheap as a stop gap, as i'm finacially stretched at the mo, I know its about 2* the processing of my card so i may borrow it and give it a try this weekend.

Thanks.
