So I'm looking to upgrade the headlights on my B6 A4 which currently have halogens I believe.

Ideally I'd like to install HID's which I believe need to be Xenons? As well as converting to auto lights.

Does anyone know the items required to do this and if it's possible on this model? A rough estimate of cost would be good too.

Thanks

The B6 A4 has projector headlights as standard does it not? If so, no conversion is needed beyond buying a HID kit for £60ish and fitting it - some modification to bulb holders may be required but thats it.

How does a conversion kit work? Does it used the current halogen lamps? Does it replace them with xenons?
the kit had the bulbs and ballast. you connect the ballast to your orignal wiring and pop the bulb into the headlamp thats it

tho I seen a bmw 5 that had to be modded becuase the clip didt fit, I'm sure it was instalation error as it took the guy 3 hours to change oil and filters

The E39 5 Series requires modifications to the bulb holders. The E60 5 Series requires a replacement clip with a different profile.

That site only does 8000K, something around 5000K would be good.

Can anyone recommend a site that sells other degrees of brightness?

If I wanted to replace the headlights altogether (with DRL fitted ones as I like the look :p) presumably I can buy these as Xenon and not need the conversion kit?

Aftermarket headlights with DRL's will look ****. It wont make your car look like a 2010 A4. It'll make it look like an old A4 the owner desperately wishes was a new A4. Don't do it.

^THIS.

Retrofitted DRL's on cars that didn't have them from the factory look absurd. They don't make you and your car look cool. They make you look like a chav halfwit. The mildly amusing thing is that everyone else on the road realises this except for those driving said cars c/w retrofitted DRL's.

Stick on DRL's are the new "coloured LED sidelights".

6000k is very blue btw - mine are stock (civic, 4300k) and already have quite a strong tint. Be sure you have seen an example of each bulb before buying. If you want it to look aftermarket but not silly the 6000k will be fine - if trying to make it look standard fit then 4300k. 8000k is ridiculous looking.. imo

I've used 6000k in the past but 4300k is indeed the best option. Still "looks nice" if that's your bag but more importantly it will afford better vision with a better output of light than the 6000k versions. And obviously if its an "upgrade" you want to carry out on your headlights then better visibility is the reason to do so.

I got a kit off ebay for £30, sounds cheap but i cant see how its any different than the more expensive kits after shopping around and definitely a big improvement over halogen. The bulbs may not burn as long with the cheaper kits but there cheap to buy on there own anyway under £10 a pair (without ballast). The only issue i have found is sometimes I get slight interference on FM from the ballast, probably cheap circuitry.

The biggest advice ide give you is avoid anything above 6000k temp. I made the mistake of getting 8k's how i regretted it! too blue and chavy and poor visibility especially in the wet.

I saw 3 cars driving together with about 6 of those halfords LED strips on the front, a Punto, Corsa and Saxo. it looked absolutely ridiculous but gave me some laughs

Once you've bought the kit you already have the ballast (the small box that starts the HID gas) if you wanted to change the colour all you need is different bulbs and will work with the same ballast. Just make sure you buy the correct type of bulbs for the housing i.e. H7's, H1's etc. You can buy HID bulbs on there own cheap.
