Ok folks, I think I'm overcomplicating this way more than is necessary and I would be more than happy for that to be pointed out :D.

Upshot is this... When I'm unable to use my speakers on my PC, I plug my Sennheiser HD 555's into the 3.5mm jack on the top of my case. Everything works fantastic, the PC picks up the headphones and switches to them as the output as appropriate.

The problem is volume. Anything that outputs sound needs to have the volume turned down as low as possible and of course this needs to be done via the various application or game menus. This then means it needs to be put back up when I'm done with the headphones.

Can anyone recommend something I can put between the PC and the headphones to give me 'in-line' volume control?

Thanks in advance for any advice! :)

Could you not just use the master volume control in the bottom right hand of windows? That would mean you just need to move one slider, instead of lots of application specific ones, its what i do.

I had a similar problem and bought this for £5.99 from a popular national electronics store beginning with M:

Headphone Extension Cord with Volume Control

Extender lead for headphones
Suitable for all personal stereos
Add a volume control to your existing headphones
Pocket clip for easier portability

Google the product code: L43AF
