i've just about gotten fedup with PC speakers, and i've realised that i spend more time wearing my headphones than not.

because of this, i'd like to ditch speakers alltogether and just buy a really high-quality set of headphones.

my budget is £100 max.

i've been looking at either the Sony MDR-SA1000's (£90 ish) and the Sennheiser HD595's. (£95 ish)

anyway, which of these two is the best? are there any other sets (like Grado's) that i ought to consider?

<edit>
oh, can i just say that i really don't like over-ear 'phones, only circumaural (is this even a word?) ones :)

HD595s are awesome, very clean and naturaly open design sound, you will find them very comfortable and can wear for long peroids of time.

I loved mine but had to get some closed pair, guess thats the biggest draw back of the hd595s they leak noise due to the open design.. so what u hear is what everyone in the room hears too.

I ended up with some audio technic A900s for £140 imported from sigapore. There closed cans so dont leak noise and similar to HD595s accept closed :)

I have Sennheiser HD555's - fantastic quality headphones, especially for the price.
Worst thing about them is they leak sound quite bad and you can sometimes hear out - but you can just pump up the volume ;)

Right. sennheisers are starting to sound very attractive now.
Also, i can't find any reviews of the Sony pair. does anyone have any experience with them?

Senn 595s are good, and also look at the alessandro ms-1 at $99.

Check out audio technica and beyer dynamic too. I'm a big grado fan, but wil be getting some senns too pretty soon.

ahh reminds me the other day on headfiers I noticed someone posted Senn HD-700s due Jan08 :D

Obviously didnt quite pann out lol

If you do get ya new cans plz give us a mini review so we can robb ya afterwards ;)

so, are the HD595's not so good?

Ive heard from the headfiers forums that the 580s are pretty amazing headphones there on similar leagues to the HD600-650 headphones.

Regardless of what u grab id say you would still be content and very happy even with the HD595s. If you have been using £30-50 headphones all your life prepare to be surprised even your old tracks will sound new again ;)

The one good thing I loved about the HD595s is that u can stick them into any device, pc soundcard, telly, ipod and just enjoy them... with the other headphones u may need headphone amps to bring there true soundquality out.

Just a factor u should be aware of.....

I see them brand new off fleabay for £89.99 + free delivery
not bad I paid £99 for mine a year ago from richer sounds.

HD-580's and HD-600's sound pretty much identical - Your HD-580's were a bargain, I payed £80 for mine (2nd hand) after shopping around...

My HD 595's are amazing, just a shame I need to sell them now :(
Best headphones I have ever owned. You do need at the very least to have a soundcard- plugged into my new macbook... they don't sound good at all and does not do them any justice

There's nothing wrong with the HD-595's but I don't think they're worth anything like £95. I would have a good look for some HD-580's, these use the same drivers as the HD-600's and sound nearly as good - they're just in a completely different league to the HD-595's.
If you can't find a nice pair of 580's I'd consider alternatives to Sennheiser to make better use of your budget. Have a read over at headfi but keep some large pinches of salt handy.

I'm sure you'd be happy with 595's, at least if you'd got some before myself and others chimed in. I fear you'd feel a bit disappointed now. :o

Ive had my Senny hd-580 headphones for about 3 yrs now and they are the best sounding cans i have ever owned. The only drawback ... i,m on my 3rd set of cable/leads as they keep going pop & not cheap (30 squid) to replace.

Got my eye on them there Grado,s for my next birthday ;)

What else is recommended for about £100 ??

How on earth do you keep doing that?
The HD-650 cable which is more substantial and better sounding (fits the HD-580) is about £15... And whilst buying spare there are a couple of parts from the 600's that fit the 580's and are said to make them sound better. I use 650's these days myself so I never tried any of those upgrades bar the cable.

Have a look at Audio Technica.
