Looking for a decent but cheapest (say 60 max) gaming surround sound headset, with mic. To play elite dangerous on and use voiceattack.

Also would dedicated sound card make any difference at all? Haven't used a sound card in years.

surround sound is small drivers acting like surround sound or stereo is two drivers.
At your budget you will only get virtual surround sound so just avoid that.

That's utter nonsense - ask Shankly, he just went through this whole true surround vs virtual argument and couldn't be happier with his virtual surround and stereo headphones.

Can confirm Virtual surround on my stx II is amazing. moved all the points arround to enhance it how I like it in game sounds superb. :o

What headset do you have and your running the stx ok which will be a huge improvement from an on board connection. As I assume you are using Jack's or coaxial as usb would be by passed.
Because one person went through it that's the book written then. Sorry I thought we were all allowed opinions not just one person on one thing?
I know people that were happy with Dolby prologic until they actually worked out spending the extra and getting Dolby digital was worth it. You'll pay more for a true digital headphone system than you will for surround sound. At the budget he's got I'm saying he's better off with stereo. Then we you want to spend more and make it true digital sound it may be worth it. I've had various headsets over the years razor, trittonsx Logitechs my Razer baracudas did a great job on 5.1 took me a while to get used to them but going back to stereo my sennheisers I dont miss it.

I run the virtual surround on my stx through my Game one's and my Eltax monitor III's

one is connected via RCA the other via 6.3mm jack but I have several pairs of gaming headsets and once you get used to virtual surround on a stereo headset it's absolutely fine for gaming.

Like rids said ask shankly he argued with cookeh and rids till he was blue in the face then bit the bullet we haven't heard much from him since as he's probably too busy enjoying his new and improved experience. I'm pretty sure if he found the Kaves better we would have heard all about it by now ;)

However I think wires have been crossed here. I think rids assumed you meant virtual surround in soundcards for proper headsets was rubbish not stereo gaming headsets labelled as 5.1 through being Virtual

Your all talking in riddles, aka above my head.

Going to use on board sound, does all on board sound support virtual surround sound? Or do I need to dig the mobo specs out for you guys?

you would need to provide specs as some onboard is above average.

You would be better off with some low impedance stereo phones like the kingston hyper X clouds or the Creative Aurvana Live.

Surround sound as he will only get virtual which is worse that 5.1!

I was saying that virtual through a good stereo headset/headphone is better than 5.1 through surround sound headsets.

It would help if you actually said what you meant - what you've written is saying that virtual is worse than 5.1, which is the opposite of what you're saying in your next post.

i mean exactly what i mean

Stereo is great

Virtual sound is ok

5.1 is good if you like it but it needs to be sent to each channel correctly and not some makeshift thing.

Personally i dont like virtual through a stereo headset sounds all echoey.

Stereo is only great if the game has a built in surround driver included - otherwise it just sounds like stereo, ie. no surround at all. This is just doing what the sound card does.

You say:
Virtual sound is ok
and
Personally i dont like virtual through a stereo headset sounds all echoey.

Make your mind up, either it's OK or it isn't. Virtual surround is only made for stereo headsets & headphones, that's why it's virtual.
