hi there, I'd like a headset which would allow me to have game volume coming out of my 5.1 speakers, yet have skype for example (or another voice chat program) playing through the headset with an attached microphone.

Is this possible? I want a headset with just a small earpiece; quite similar to the old wired xboxlive headsets

thanks you :)

You need a sound card/onboard which allows you to have two separate audio streams.

Then the programs playing the music/words need to have settings which let you send the audio to different outputs.

Headsets and speakers just plug in, they don't do anything to do with splitting audio.

Some random chap talking about it:
Playing the same sound through both headphones and speakers at the same time is easy.

Different audio through different outputs is possible to an extent.
Got it to work but I used winamp which allows me to select the output.

My soundcard allows me to "make front and rear output devices playback two different audio streams simultaneously".

This was found under Device advanced settings of the Realtek HD audio manager.

This then created another audio device which is the second output. One output will be the default and the other the secondary.

It is then possible to, in certain programs (winamp and VLC player at least) set them to use the secondary audio output device.
