Hey all,
right I'm after a new head unit for my mk3 Mondeo so I can either have a hard drive built in or an aux./usb port
- however I dont want a cheap looking plastic cover to cover up the gap left by a smaller radio, I want to carry on using my current speakers but most impotantly I still want the use of the radio/volume/skip etc stalk

Anyone know a decent radio which will suit these requirements? sorry if ive been a little vague but I know sod all about radios :p

thought id stick a pic I have of the interior... might be helpful in some way...

Cant really see but is that double or 1.5 DIN?

Usually retaining steering column controls requires an extra HU > Control interface which will run you around £30.

£5-10 will get you plug and play install with an adapter harness.

As for head unit choice keeping stock speakers means that you should not spend the earth on a HU that will not stretch its legs quality wise. Go for functionality and features that you need in a budget you are willing to spend.

I spent £205 on a Pioneer DEH-7100BT that works great and gives me bluetooth tethering for phone and handsfree/voice control dialing. Something to consider if you want it.

Get the fascia with the cubby hole rather than the blanking plate, they look a lot better.

As sin_chase said, you can get an adaptor for the stalk controls.

Mine (X001 with an ipod), its a facelift so slightly different:

Thanks for the help guys - I finally settled on a Alpine CDE-W203Ri and asked about about an adaptor which got the stalk working - however he told me that my current stereo in a mk3 mondeo 2002 was a '1 din and three quarters' - I googled this and cant find anything - is he telling porkys ? :p

Found this on the bay, looks to be identical to mine and it says double din...

The ebayer is an idiot, as is your mate - its neither. As Janesy says, its a ford size, not a standard size

You need a boggo standard DIN size and fascia (like mine above), but you need a fascia for the prefacelift like this one

Yeh the standard one for the facelift is crud too - for some reason there's a big metal brace behind the dash which really limits depth (surprising given the size of the dash!), so with the cheap ones which sit flush its impossible to get the HU in (even with my optical drive free unit!). Plus cheap clips make it fall out if you sneeze and it leaves a big gap at the bottom. The one I've got is actually a bosch one, took ages to find and cost £30!
