Headunit Recommendations

however I don't think it sounds very good compared to a good hu I went for the most expensive Kenwood at the time since I liked its range of EQ and HP / LP filters sounds very good with the right config.

I do like the look of that sony but having a non removable face is like I said a serious design and security flaw.

The sony has some of the best sound processing chips available. Hence the "Burr-brown" stickers. It also has a wide range of hp/lp filters as well as sub control. I have the pleasure of being able to test any and all of the current ranges from Alpine, Sony, Kenwood, JVC, Panasonic and Pioneer but i always come back to the Sony because of its sound quality. Having been a SQ judge at various SCA events up and down the country i tend to go for those units that sound the best but i also like the "Simplistic" styling of the Sony.

Are you looking at the same Sony as me, don't think there is a sony HU out there that is "simplistic" they are all over hyped, and multcoloured ugly things aren't they?

So you can test any unit you want yet you select a sony was that an educated and informed choice some might argue?

And don't play the Burr-brown Dacs line its not the be all and end all.

paradigm, how do you find the iPod interface on your new Pioneer?

Do you find it slow/difficult to navigate?

I'm looking at getting a new head unit at the moment with an iPod interface, and can't decide quite what to get - the Alpine 9850Ri is tempting.

Its not "that" slow, it takes a while to scroll through the 100+ albums, but that is mainly due to the physical number of them, if I want to get to an album nicely situated in the middle of the alphabet it takes a while!

Skipping tracks, fast-forward/reverse, shuffling etc etc is all prefectly acceptable speed wise :)

No, this is a simple black screen with only 6 small buttons and 2 rotrary controls. It does have a full colour screen but it gives you numerous options as to how you want it to display the information. I like mine with a simple white letter display.

Yes, I own and run a car audio/security/multimedia business.
When it comes to Domestic and professional systems that is very true. But there are few proper systems being used in car audio today.

Personally I'm not happy with the sound reproduction from my Sony HU (can't remember what model)

Have been thinking about the Pioneer MP77P or whatever its called. Had a couple of Pioneers before and really liked all of them.

I also really REALLY want one of those AVIC TV head units. Don't know why and don't really need sat nav as I don't go anywhere - just want it I guess :)

I'll let you into a little secret. I hate Sony headunits BUT the 9950 is a fantastic unit. In the past i would have always gone for Alpine/Kenwood/Pioneer units but this one tops them all.(i never thought i would say that about a sony)

I have a kenwood screen in our van and it sounds ok but not as good as the sony.

I fitted an Alpine 310 recently for a mate and it sounds fantastic. The pioneer is ok as well but if your not going to use the nav then i would go for the Alpine. You wont be disappointed.

Actually it's totally simplistic - it has only a few buttons on the front.

Well I've read a few reports that the DEH-P55BT doesn't work too well with imate smartphones, which will be my next phone, and the Pioneer website says "not recommended" for my current K750. So a rethink is in order...

Must have a detachable fascia though, as my work car park isn't all that safe :o

I can't find that DEH-P88RS online anywhere though?

No, thats not simplistic at all, it has a gash large multicoloured LCD, and genearlly just looks cheap  Your's and my idea of "simplistic" must vary a LOT.

Currently using mine with an IMATE JAM ;)

No issues.

The unit can store your entire phonebook (uploadable via bluetooth). It instantly knows who is calling because its stored on the HU. No issues here anyway.

Have you any idea how many people dont bother taking the face off their units?

More than those who do.

I have one of those Sony units and it sounds fantastic. It's up there with the top of the range Alpines for sound qualty.

I've got a spare front for a 77mp as someone nicked my faceless stereo :)

Does anyone know if these USB compatible units are capable of powering a 2.5" external drive? could be quite cool.

I've heard that the cheap-o ones from fleabay and Aldi work ok with 2.5" drives, but I'm not sure about the Kenwood and JVC ones.

I did like this idea at first, but I think navigating through 10gb+ of MP3's could be quite a challenge!
