Hi,
Have been a bit slack re: training post a knee injury, just getting back into it again.... I have recently been taking my resting pulse etc.. usually circa 60-ish when lying down in bed but will go up to 75-85 when sitting at desk and higher on the train - up to 100 or so just sitting/standing on the train

does anyone have any information re: normal heart rates for sitting, standing etc.. perhaps relative to resting rate. Most links suggest 60-100 for a 'normal' resting rate... but was wondering about common ranges for things like sitting, standing, walking at steady pace etc...

I'm no expert, but I do know that trying to compare your own heart rate to someone else is fairly pointless. There's so many factors involved that it's not really worth trying.

In order to work out what zones to train in, you need to find out your max heart rate. As a rough guide it is 220 minus your age. I'm not sure of the best way to reach max heart rate. The highest I've ever recorded is going up a ridiculously steep hill on my bike and being on the verge of falling off and/or dying.

Once you work out your HR max, you can work out the various zones which can be used to to make sure you're training in the right area. Again, I'm no expert, so I'm not going to pretend I know what these zones are!

I know I said comparing HR's is useless, but here's what I've experienced when riding my bike :p
- I've not taken a proper resting hear rate. I know it's around 80-100 when walking around before going on a ride
- Between 100-120 is a piece of cake. Could do this all day long
- Between 120-140 is easy enough to hold a conversation while putting in a bit of effort
- 140-160 is pretty hard work. Can't speak for long at this rate.
- 160-180 is seriously chugging
- Anything over 180 I'm ready to fall off
