building regs require it but as you said it is pointless
the trick is to take the head off the TRV in the room with the roomstat in it
to the OP get one of these you will save a fortune http://www.honeywelluk.com/product.aspx?r=ws&p=2448 about £90 quid + vat
it also comes with a night set back mode which will reduce the temp overnight for you as stated earlier in this thread
also a standard programmer that turns on and off in blocks wastes gas because the boiler never senses room temps efficently even with a roomstat as the programmer overides the stat where as a programmable roomstat as linked above never actually turns the boiler off so to speak. Instead it only turns the boiler on when required ( generally to heat up the house by 1deg ) which is a lot more efficent that the old mechanical programmers
. So taking the head off it would be one way of solving that potential problem.I'm pretty sure the building regulations state that you must have "at least 2 temperature controlled zones". A TRV in a room counts as one of these, so as long as you have at least 2 rooms with TRV's you are meeting the regulations. I could be wrong, but I'm sure that's how it's worded (and many people assume that it means you HAVE to have a room thermostat).
In any case, you shouldn't have a TRV in the room with a room thermostat anyway. So taking the head off it would be one way of solving that potential problem.
