Heavily Tuned AMD R5 5600X vs. i5-10600K: Memory & CPU Overclocking Showdown

I already have a 3600 so I'd like to get an 8 core but will wait for AMD to hopefully release the 5700X with sensible prices otherwise I'll probably skip this gen altogether.

Yup in the same boat, these are outside my reach, if Intel do come back with a more cost-effective alternative that's where i'll go, don't get complacent AMD.

Sooo i have a set of TridentZ RGB C16 3600mhz in my 3800X build, and the same set in my kids 2600X build..

Should i put both sets in mine when my 5900x arrives and buy a new set of ram for the kids build?

4x8 Dims giving me 32gb if C16 3600mhz

says who?
Zen3 won't even be available to everyone that wants one until 2021, most likely.

The chances of Zen4 appearing in <=13 months from Zen 3 is very small. That would make Zen3 the shortest-lived Zen so far.

2022 is a much more reasonable expectation. Unless AMD knows something and has reason to accelerate the release; I can't see it otherwise.

Update my 4 sticks are single rank, so these should be decent for tuning on a 5900X i reckon!
It should, yes.

There's no PS6 or XBox Series Y launching at the same time tho...

Rocket lake may deliver both.

Same.

I really do want the better IPC with 5000 series but don't want to lose 2 cores switching from 3700x to 5600x nor do I want to pay for the badly priced 5800x. A sweet price for a 5700x and I'll definitely bite, otherwise I will skip this gen.

No but a socket change with DD5 implementation coming out before the end of next year is unlikely especially if AMD decide on a summer refresh of zen 3 perhaps with a 7nm IO die and some minor clock improvements.

DDR5 was released in July.

Yeah but mass production won't really get going until 2021 and most of that will be going into servers.

Just can't see AMD hitting a 2021 release date with AM5 as there will need to be a lot of changes implemented and thorough testing will be needed. They only just managed to get zen 3 before the end of this year and that was on the same socket / memory and with motherboards that have already be out over a year.

(Dates taken from Google, I have no memory).

Zen1 = March 2017
Zen+ = April 2018 (+13 months)
Zen 2 = July 2019 (+15 months)
Zen 3 = November 2020 (+16 months)

Even if you take ~a couple months from the Zen 3 release due to Covid, you're still at 13-14 months after Zen 2.

I guess if we think Zen 3+ is coming after Zen 3, it could be closer to the 13 months from Zen to Zen+. Even using 13 months you're looking at December 2021, and that's the most optimistic estimate you could possibly use :p

I think 2021 is more likely.

Unless you believe the next release will be somehow different to what's gone before?

You might be right, even so Alder Lake which is due second half of 2021 (which could be as late as December 2021) If Intel can meet that and AMD have another 16 month cycle Zen 4 will be out in February 2022, 13 Months would be December 2021.

While I agree that Zen 4 release in 2021 is unlikely, Intel is targeting its DDR5 equipped Alder Lake at Q4 2021. Expect memory vendors to start selling DDR5 desktop kits then.

Just wondering whether to get a 5600x to replace my 8700k as I know where I can get one to buy now but from what I have seen its too close to the 8700k and I`m looking for more of a bigger upgrade and I think I should be looking at 5800x/5900.

No. Its not worth it, if you like the idea of 8 vs 6 cores yes but you're right there isn't going to be a huge difference going from a 6 core Coffeelake to a 6 core Zen 3.
