Panting like a fiend
I'm looking at having to re-organise and potentially empty our garage out so the floor can be redone (half is wood, and it flooded...), so looking at the storage with a view to making better use of the space in there, and probably temporarily having to store tools in either a neighbours garage or our dining room whilst work is done.

So it has been pretty much decided that we probably want to get some heavy duty, free standing garage shelving/racking which opens up a lot of options and i'm a little lost.

I've been looking at some in Homebase of all places (my father wanted to look at their christmas lights), which seems to fit the bill for what I want, especially as it's wire/metal shelving rather than mdf, but they only had one in stock and I'm hoping someone can point me to a supplier of similar, preferably at less than homebase prices ;)

I've been looking through a bunch of the google results but none of them seem to do anything in roughly the right size with the the wire/metal shelving.
Due to the height of the garage roof, and the wish to raise any shelving so the feet at are least 10cm off the floor (so any future flooding is unlikely to affect it*) the maximum height I can go with is about 1800mm, Ideally I'd be looking at 1500 so the top shelf is easier to reach, and about 450-600mm deep, length isn't much of a problem.

*We had the worst flooding basically ever here, and it led to about 1cm of water in the garage, the first time that has ever happened. Fortunately nothing was really stored on the floor except some plastic boxes.

Though the online side is continuing AFAIK Homebase has gone into administration so something which may be a factor.

When we had to clear the garage out the first time, I bought some 'cheapo' racking, identical to this:

400mm deep, 1800high.. £51 with 175kg per shelf. you can get wider/deeper/taller if you want.

It only needed to last long enough so when the garage project had completed I could move everything back in..

However, I've now had it 10 years, it got moved to the shed, I bolted them together in clumps of 3 and also secured it to the wall (using standoffs) and surprisingly it's still 'perfect' no warped MDF, I've screwed many things to it (chargers etc) and have no desire to spend 3x as much..

I had 6 of them in a line freestanding originally, I used 2 L Brackets per side to bolt the floot and had them bolted together and it was surprisingly solid enough.. however, if you want super large super sturdy shelving, then just pay the extra..

I'm not a fan of the wire shelves, I prefer the mdf, you can put small bits of wood on to form guides for storage boxes to slide in/out, you can screw things to it, etc.. helps with organising things neatly.

As @Rroff said, a lot of Homebase has gone the way of the dodo so warranty etc won't be possible. There may be some mega bargains if you are by a store that has stock and is closing down tho

I've got a variety in my garage and shed, the most durable is actually the plastic rack type shelving. quite lightweight but it's amazingly durable, got some in my shed too as it's got bigger feet so spreads the load out better on a wooden floor plus no bits to get soggy like the mdf or chipboard shelves can on cheaper rack shelving kits

cheers for the replies, somehow I'd missed that one on racking solutions :)
I'm going to have a proper look at it later as that seems like it would be good.

Re homebase, yeah I saw that yesterday, although IIRC The Range has bought the brand and something like half the stores and there isn't that much to go wrong with metal shelving, now if I was buying a kitchen from them or an expensive electrical appliance ;)

I wouldn't mind the mdf shelf ones, but the garage is unfortunately a bit damp (profile steel roof so condensation can be an issue), so ideally powder coated metal or galvanised for the strength/not going funny in the damp.
We've got some of the fully plastic units in the shed, but they're probably not up to the job of taking some of the tools and AFAIK don't come in the right sizes (I need something 450-600mm deep).

All my shelving is metal framed + metal shelves -Wife has same in greenhouse and not seen any signes of rust
My original shelving I cadged and it's Link 51 - solid as a rock but expensive - if you are young it could be a good investment as you wouldn't need to buy it again..

Homebase were selling the rack 400 version for £99 last year, would definitely recommend if they drop the price again.
