I have two hard drives.

HD 1 - Vista

HD 2 - 100gb partitioned for linux, 130gb free

I downloaded ubuntu live cd for amd 64 (i have amd athlon single core 3500+)

I burnt it to a cd-r

I restarted and the cd booted.

I clicked run or install ubuntu.

It sounds like its doing something but the monitor turns off and says no signal.

Now im stuck :D

:eek::eek::eek: Help :eek::eek::eek:

What videocard do you have? Is it over VGA or DVI? If it's ATI, use VGA connection. On mine if I use DVI it appears to boot, but the screen is blank. Switch over the VGA and it's in Ubuntu desktop.

Press F4 and select a standard res, ie 1024x768, 32 bit. Then use VGA-VGA. It should work. Although you have Nvidia which are wider supported, still it might just be a DVI issue.

This is what I am trying now.

burn i386 alternate text based to disk.

I am now using integrated graphics which is vga

I am then going to try installing that way.
Do I have to install it using a command line interface though? If so I will not manage.

Ubuntu does support DVI I have an GF8600.

Your problem is the 64bit version of Ubuntu, it did this for me too. I would find that if I reset it then it would do the same again. If you reset and eject the disk it wouldn't load into Vista either. Too get it to boot, I had to turn of the computer entirely. The power to the monitor still drops off during loading but it comes back on again after a few minutes of waiting.

In fact even once it is installed it still does it but always gets into Ubuntu fine.

Like you I have
Two hard drives
Vista on one
Ubuntu 64 on the other
A Geforce 8 graphics card

If its not one of the above I would say its a combination of some of the above.

My moneys on Ubuntu 64 with a GF8

I wouldn't bother with the 64 bit version either.

I put up with debian 64 for the past year & half.. finally got fed up and changed over to i386 Ubuntu.

Oh.. even though your've sorted your graphics issue for anyone else reading..... Choose "Use Safe graphics mode"

It's not like crappy safe mode on windows.
