From the Pitpass' 2010 Top 10 Drivers article. Here's what Mike Lawrence had to say about the non-inclusion in his top 10 of the Spaniard:

Oh dear, Fernando Alonso did not make my Top Ten and that is because he is a wuss and Formula One should have no place for such people. I had been a fan since his days at Minardi, and have the text to prove it. but he has turned girlie.

At the top of his game, Alonso has been superb, but he has also been a big girl's blouse. Hamilton committed no infringement at Valencia, the safety car was within the white line when he overtook it, you can check that on YouTube.

Either there is a rule about the white line or there is not. Hamilton obeyed the rule, as did McLaren, while Alonso threw his toys out of the pram. That was the point when he lost the World Championship, it had nothing to do with Petrov at Abu Dhabi, who was only defending his position.

Hamilton did not infringe the rules, his drive-through penalty, which was down-right wrong, robbed him of a chance to challenge for a win. This was a political thing. We must not upset Ferrari, the provider of motoring bling to the funny-money classes.

Alonso then lost it, because he is a wuss. He allowed his Ferrari to be overtaken by a Sauber on the last corner and it was a home Grand Prix. He is the highest paid driver in F1, by a long way, and he used that to deny Massa his win at Hockenheim which was a year to the day since Felipe had suffered an accident which threatened his life.

In Abu Dhabi, Alonso could not pass a driver in his rookie year who was fighting for position and, maybe, a seat for 2011. Petrov had every right to fight for his place, Alonso did not have the gonads to take it from him and hardly made an attempt. Afterwards, the big girl's blouse gestured at Petrov and then lacked the balls to admit that he had done what hundreds of millions of viewers had seen him do.

Ferrari is happy to employ a wuss, but a wuss has no place in my Top Ten.

I'm not sure guys, but I think he's saying that Fernando "The Daddy™" Alonso is a wuss? ;)

He sounds like a bit of an idiot on that bit...
He doesn't focus on the season and harks on about 2 races. Good overview of a drivers whole season... *cough*
Never mind that the last race was diabolical for overtaking, for pretty much all of the drivers...

Three races, by my count Emlyn. Valencia, Hockenheim, Abu Dhabi. But I agree, it's no objective look at his season. It's just an amusing rant :)

Maybe. But I bet Kamui Kobayashi could have found a way past if he was in that Ferrari....

I'm saying that the Renault was a brick wall and this track was **** for passing...
Look at Massa stuck behind that Toro Rosso, I know the immediate response will be "lol, Massa" but... The whole "race" was a let down of cars stuck behind cars stuck behind cars.
If it wasn't for it being the championship decider, it would be without doubt the worst event of the 2010 season.

You don't have to be the top driver in F1 to keep people you from passing you. The car/track design seems to do most of the work for you...

I love the fact that Alonso has ranged from being regarded the best driver of the season by some, to being totally useless by others. However, my opinion on Alonso's whole season can be neatly sumarised by his attitude for the post pit stop part of the Abu Dhabi GP.

Alonso is behind Petrov, and quite far down. As it stands, finishing where he is Alonso doesnt win the drivers title. Regardless of wether it means he comes second or third or forth or whatever, it doesnt matter, if you are in F1 to win, being second means nothing. So, as I see it, Alonso had to either stay behind Petrov and loose the title, or go past him, and potentially win it. Being behind that car meant he didnt win, and this was the last race of the season. All he has left to do is past that Renault.

But he doesnt. He doesnt even try. In that position he could have atleast tried a stupid wild move up the inside, or a massive late braking move. But he didnt, he sat there and whinged, and then complained to Petrov after.

And that summed up Alonsos season. He is not a driver prepared to make his own way, he expects others to fall in line for him through some bizzar feeling of self importance, and for it to be handed to him on a plate. The thought that he might actually have to race for some positions must have seemed utterly stupid to him. Alonso, actually OVERTAKE someone, without them being told to move?

So thats it. Finishing where he did he is just another driver who didnt win the title. He didnt even try to get past Petrov.

And its a shame, because this is the same guy that 4 years ago everyone loved because he took the fight to Schumacher and beat him, fair and square, with skill and talent, twice.

He has been too mollycoddled by recent teams (Renault/Ferrari) to the extent that he now has a mentality of entitlement, Renault went to the extent of race fixing for him (Piquet being ordered to crash) and more recently Ferrari ordered Massa to move over for him... when he lost in Abu Dhabi you could see he was angry at Petrov for getting in his way and racing him as if in Alonso's mind he had no right to do.

If his teams stop treating him like royalty he might toughen up more and start making things happen for himself again.

His is just a girl :)
Well he has moaned like one all season. And if ferrari don't sort out their Kers system for next season
he will moan even more about his bum being burnt by the Kers batteries.

I assume you have never raced cars?

It's nothing like as simple as you make out to put a do or die move on a competitor. Quite simply if you can't get close enough at the right part of the track, if you try anyway you will crash, end of story. No amount of willpower or risk taking will see you get past. Alonso did in fact try one do or die move and very nearly collected Petrov.
Oh I'm sure from your armchair you might have seen several possible opportunities, but frankly at Abu Dhabi with Alonso hitting the rev limiter down the main straight way before Petrov reached his top speed it wasn't going to happen unless Petrov made an error. However Petrov didn't make any significant errors.
Had Alonso literally come from nowhere and crashed into Petrov what would that have achieved? If Vettel retired Alonso was still in a position to win the championship. A REALLY stupid lunge resulting in a crash would only have resulted in retirement, injury or even further punishment by the FIA (maybe even carried over to the following year)
Don't forget - this is the same guy who went around the outside of Schumacher at 130R - it's not fear or "expectation" that stopped him getting past - simply judgement.

I'm going to add some rolly eyes now for effect :rolleyes::rolleyes: :D
- it's just somethign that really grinds my gears when anyone claims that a F1 driver should have just forced his way past in situations where to do so would be reckless.

There have been plenty of incidents where you can criticise Alonso this year, but I really don't think this is one of them.

On a related note - Abu Dhabi needs a serious overhaul. It's a spectacular venue, but the track itself is hideous from a racing point of view -probably the worst on the calendar with valencia.

Who have you raced for mate ?

Just for the record after re-reading my messgae, I wasn't having a dig personally, I just get a bit frustrated when the drivers get slated for things that are largely out of their control. Unfortunately while most of us have kicked a football, or swung a golf club etc, not many get to really appreciate what it is like to drive an F1 car. Even on board shots are so far removed from the reality, it just doesn't convey a fraction of what the drivers are actually faced with and how tough certain situations really are.

Hard to believe we are talking about the same driver who overtook Schumacher on the 130R!

He didn't he overtook before the entry to the 130R. No one ever overtakes or will ever overtake in the 130R. He swept in before the turn in.

Maybe. But I bet Kamui Kobayashi could have found a way past if he was in that Ferrari....
:D

Yet the over taking god hamilton couldn't pass water at the same track on the same day.

Used to like PP but they are too far up their own backside now.

Lawerence is a very nice guy, had many a debate with him.

I don't get why he's so hung up on alonsos frustration. He's a 100% commited despite already winning 2 titles. That same kind of frustration you would get from Senna, Prost, Mansell, MS, or anyone else who won many races. You can't survive in modern F1 without it.

Yet Lawerence rates Hamilton as no 2, who whinged on the radio to the team whenever anything went wrong without the intelligence to understand what happened in the race was his fault.

Had the points been reversed between Alonso and Hamilton you would have had hamilton castrate the team on the radio in public for messing up. Alonso though got out the car and was fair and fully aware of who they tried to cover (webber).

Is alonso a wuss?

Yep but so was Senna, mansell, piquet and prost at times. He's far from the first driver I've ever seen make gestures in the cockpit out of frustration.

Remember how upset Senna got when someone dared unlap themselves when he was driving slowly. You would think he owned the race track.

nice back track, we are still all waiting to know what series you have raced in.

You can overtake in Abu Dhabi, it just takes balls.. something Alonso has lost this season. Yeh he had them in the past but hes been a whiney monobrow twerp this year. article is spot on tbh
