Does he need just the base unit or a full system including monitor, software and peripherals? If he does just need the base unit what monitor does he have already so that the graphics card can be tailored accordingly?
 
right yeah he doesnt need keyboard or mouse monitor is optional dont know off the top of my head what he has got. he said that he was going to get a new monitor in a few months time so i gues you could just spec a base unit for that price and possibly add a monitor that could be looked at getting at a later date
 
Just going as a base unit specification I'd aim for something like this as a good balance between performance and price, there are of course faster options in some areas but price can get a bit out of hand.
