Hehe that's me. Don't worry about the cost there well worth it. Go for lock-on with the blackshark add on if you can, it's as real as a sim gets.

Best ever was the EA/Janes Combat series Longbow 2 (there was an original inferior Longbow). Superb graphics and gameplay including a dynamic campaign. If memory serves it was available around 1999 but it was designed and optimised around the 3dfx Voodoo 2 graphics card so even if you could get it working under XP and on a Geforce/ATI card, the landscape would look chequerboard compared to what it would under 3dfx.

Sadly missed (3dfx and Longbow 2!).
 
Anyone remember Team Apache? Bit arcadey compared to hardcore sims like Lock On but I had a lot of fun with it.
 
ARMA has some great helicopter actions.. And you can make all your own missions dead easy. Plus already 100's of new ones online to download.
 
Black shark for Lock on wont be released for a good while yet, perhaps as late as next year. The best combat chopper sim at the moment is Enemy Engaged Comanche vs Hokum. It's about 7 years old but with all the community mods installed it looks really fresh and more importantly plays really well.

The sequel is due for release later this month too so it might be worth hanging on for that but I can highly reccommend the EECH with the community mods in the meantime.

Oh yes, that is some of the best flight combat i've ever seen. Espicially if you're flying from the carrier on Oman in a blackhawk, and bail out over the sea. Even better if you've got someone locked on :D You just see you in a chute floating down gently, then all of a sudden "BOOM" with a massive chunk of heli landing in the sea below. Ahhhh, good old days. :D

Now I love BF2 as much as the next man, but I'm baffled at how you can describe it's air combat as the best you've ever seen.
