After the demo I was very disappointed with this game and said as much on these forums. However, I've just spent the evening playing the beta and I really enjoyed it. Its got that same basic appeal that Diablo had and I urge any fans of that game to give it a shot. Yes the graphics could do with a bit of work but I'm running it on a two year old system and it doesn't look too bad. I'm still not sold on the subscription only content but if they get enough money rolling in to keep developing the game maybe I'll change my mind. Also it looks like consensual PvP will be available at launch which is another bonus.

So if you tried the demo and thought it was rubbish believe me it does get a lot better. Just thought I'd set the record straight as I did slate it in the demo thread.

Yeah i'm going to give it another go over the weekend if the downloads to do not corrupt for a third time :[

The beta ends on saturday but if you can get an evenings play in tomorrow its worth it. I'm glad I did as it completely changed my opinion of the game.

yes, same here, whoever came up with that demo without midly changing the levels so they had more varied instances. based on the demo i thought it was not only bad, but so bad that an entire company might actually go to hell along with anyone involved with deciding to make it.

but the beta brings it into an entirely different light. i still think it has major issues, i'm not sure how long it is, i got to the end of the general beta, which is like around when you hit level 20ish and you can't go any further. but it took me roughly 2 days to get through, of which i dunno, maybe it was only 6-10 hours(really can't work it out around all the footie watching and sleep :p ).

the demo without question needed another area, with different map style to give you a better impression of the game, the demo, pretty much everyone hated, which obviously doesn't bode well for sales. but, i played it as single player despite being "online", it really doesn't feel like it needs to be online at all, its not difficult, and i can only imagine all the maps feeling massively overcrowded playing with more people and having spawn counts increase.

i think based on the beta i might buy it. i couldn't get dx10 stuff working, though they insist they are planning to have it working equal or faster than dx9 with extra stuff. i think texture wise its still very poor enviroment wise, while characters are fine in general.

even though its much more varied than it was in the demo, by lvl 20 it was fairly samey and i again got the impression it might not change much and the next 10/20/50 levels might be dull.

think i might buy it now, might try online a bit, might pay for a subscription for a month but can't see online/paying being worth it, though i keep forgetting whats going to be made subscription.

Anyone happen to read this issue of PC Gamer? The cover is plastered with 'Hellgate' images, big writing. Looks very exciting. As I opened the packaging a couple of 'Hellgate' postcard-type-competition-forms fell out the mag.

But when they wrote 'shock verdict' (or something to that affect) on the cover in small writing - they weren't kidding.

I think they got it about right. What did they give it, 89%? I wouldn't say it was a 90%+ game yet, but with a few patches and a decent community behind it things could change. If you approach it expecting MMORPG levels of content and endgame then you will be disappointed, but if you're looking for the next Diablo it does a bloody good job.

well what i like about it is the lack of excessive mmo content. most like wow, you do a certain amount of pointless collection missions, + a couple story misisons then you move on to a new area. but after lvl 10 it suddenly just exponentially increases xp needed to level and number of pointless collection missions to do. theres no interesting increase in anything, its just, lets make this longer by doubling xp needed to level this time and add in 3 times as many collection missions. its crap.

i did really like the ability to mostly do collection missions alongside story line missions at the same time leveling at a decent pace, feeling like the story is moving along. also it has, a main story, something lacking in almost every mmorpg. ok so its basically just single player for me, and as i understand it, its really just co-op multiplayer so its not mmorpg in the classic use of the term. but most mmorpg's have a main theme/story, but you can't actually do anything about it, the world doesn't change with you and you don't directly affect the "story" that you are playing in. its all sidequests with no real end.

no, 76 I think.

wasn't a good review.

73% the reviewer did say that its a very addictive game very diablo-like....lots of looting etc. hrmmmmm not sure

Was an odd review. The low score was basically down to the mechanics of the fighing/shooting being no where near the level of moderns fps etc. However they did say the game was like a 'crack sandwich'.

I was thinking about a thread specifically for Hellgate players, their characters, area of play etc. A way to find others easily. Anyone think it's a good idea?

I played the beta for a few weeks, and to begin with, wasn't overly impressed.

I had seen the promo trailers etc beforehand, and it sounded like an epic game, yet the beta was a let down.

However, after playing my character for a few levels, I could see the potential. Come release day, patch 0 will need to improve a ton of features/general game operation for it to be a success on launch.

Thats another problem, release day. I am doubtful it will go according to plan.

So yea, this game has the potential, but it will only appear if you keep playing (and possibly paying, subscriber extras seem to make the free version look utter crap)

This is getting me off multiboxing WoW, so if anything i'm quids in :p

And yeah, maybe friday? a new thread just for people who are playing the game sounds like a good idea

It goes live in NA tomorrow so hopefully that will mean a smoother rollout for us, really looking forward to getting back into it after the beta, a thread to find folks to group with would be very helpful :)

Ive seen a lot of bad reviews and people thoughts on this game, ok i wasnt shocked at how amazing and unbelievable it looks or that it is as fast paced as a modern fps etc, BUT i only got a small amount of game time and it did leave me wanting more. I think with this game being hyped as diablo 3 or the next diablo type game gives it some very big shoes to fill.

Looking at game play i played the demo and the beta, i have to say i couldn't judge the game on the demo alone, it wasn't exciting enough because i knew after a curtain amount of playing and collecting loot i would be stopped at a brick wall at it would all seem a bit... fruitless. Though the beta was a lot of fun and that was without experiencing any group missions etc.

The games going to need its tweaks to get it more on the run but it definatly has a lot of potential.

In regards to the graphics i cant really say im too bothered, ok so they dont match anything like crysis but they work. They give the game atmosphere and it looks ok, its still a game. Personally i think its reaching a point where the developers are left with a decision as to whether they make the graphics unbelievable and they leave people having to upgrade their systems to even make the things run, or they work on making the graphics look ok but still run on a lot of older systems. Personally i think not leaving people out who cant afford to spend a stupid amount on a pc can not be a bad thing.

All in all i will be getting hellgate and giving it a good go before i make my final decision, being a huge fan of diablo 2 i feel almost compelled to. And based on the game time ive had on it i cant say i'm readying myself to be disappointed with it.

Thats a fair point about the graphics, Jontain. I'm happy enough with them as they don't give my poor old 6800GT too much of a pasting. I've just Pre-ordered. Really looking forward to getting back into this one.

I pre-ordered through the EADM as I thought they were doing some, order from us and get the game early, turns out their site is wrong (not even been fixed) so trying to get it refunded. I really want the game to be good, but I think it's a good few patches from being where I want it to be,
