Hellgate: London

I really did not like the demo. The graphics had massive slow down in strange places (bit like Rainbow 6 Vegas).

But what bugged me the most was you start in Russells Square... (apparently) and its not and nothing like it! I work very near there and walk around that area on my lunch breaks.. Bugged the hell outta me.

I think the game has potential, like a single player WOW.

THE GRAPHICS ARE LOW RESOLUTION & I'M GETTING 20FPS FFS

Someone please tell me that the game ghanges soon, i'm lvl 16 and i've been running around the same areas... killing the same creatures for what seems like decades. I cant see much future in this game unless it changes soon.

D2 was great because every act was different... mobs, scenery, bosses... hellgate just seems to rehash the same instance over and over with rotating the mobs a few times while boosting their lvls as you go along. Gah

well i have no clue whats going on, singleplayer i wanted to play with quickly, and cheat, to test out different powers so i don't choose the wrong things in multiplayer, because as of yet theres no way to change what you choose and the power descriptions are appaling. but single play performance for no reason i can fathom, is massively worse than in multiplayer. all the same maps and as soon as it gets busy on screen in single player it gets massively slow for me, spawning a summoned elemental also slows it down(when theres a few enemies around) making me think its all cpu, task manager shows one cpu maxed out, though thats one of 4 its still at 3.6Ghz.

but multiplayer had no issues, haven't checked since single player but i'm guessing multiplayer may well be using multi cores, so theres some bug, or something going on with single player.

or maybe , hell, i really don't know why single player would be slower on same settings, its stupid as hell.

another thing would be this, graphically it is terrible. but theres a reason, randomly generated maps are buggy and hard as hell to do. as you start with the idea you put a lot of effort into this map generator. unfortunately they clearly didn't do a good job, couldn't make it very complex and ended up with a crap generator able to make only simple maps with crap graphics.

had they started off from the beginning without trying to build random maps, making just every level themselves, it could have taken the same time but yet looked massively better. there were massive comprimises to make a random map generator which has backfired horribly for them.

also the whole point was to make it massively replayable with a "different experience every time". the maps barely change, theres a small number of different maps and most are just mirror images, left turns instead of right. if you play 4 characters of any class from level 1 through 20 its IDENTICAL every time. in WOW or whatever, its a set map, instances and so on, but you can start in different parts of the world, ignore some quests, do different story arc's so it CAN be VERY different each time. here there is one story, thats it, no starting different places, had they done a normal damn map system, it would have looked better and then they could focus on replayability by adding different story arc's.

oh, if you're playing on dx10, it seems to be auto setting grahics NO MATTER WHAT YOU SET IN GAME to 16xcsaa . that seems to be the main reason for really poor performance, issue doesn't seem to be there in dx9. if you run dx10, go to the my game folder in my doc's, hellgate, settings, .xml settings file, there should be two bits like <msaa> XXXXXX <msaa> in the file, change both to OFF< or both to maybe 2xmsaa and it should change yoru experience a lot, hopefully. if that doesn't work on its own try turning off trilinear filtering and/or vsync. those seem to be the three things that "fix" dx10 performance for a heck of a lot of people.

Hey thanks, that did something.
Cant believe it was set to 16Q AA, WTF lol.
Fraps is working now & its smoother now though only doing 45fps.

so theres 40 hours of single player content with a mp side bolted on however to get the best from the mp online mode you need to subscribe ? also if you dont subscribe you get less space, char slots and cant form a guild ?

could somebody kindly explain if thats correct and whether the game is good enough in the current state to buy .. thx

Ps.. if you have a mp char and then decide to subscribe can you continue with it or do you have to roll a new one ?

There's a subscriber chart that shows you what you'll get now for subscribing and the other things that they have planned for the future. As the game stands at the moment there isn't a lot of point in subscribing for most people but hopefully that'll change pretty soon.

If you can get past the bugs and crashes then yeah I think the game is well worth buying. I've found it so addictive that I didn't really care about having to clear the same area 4 times because I kept crashing out or spending ages looking for a mob that won't spawn. If you think that'll ruin it for you then maybe leave it for a few months until they get that stuff ironed out. The developers seem really active so hope it won't take too long.

You carry on playing your current characters when you subscribe but if you then decide to cancel the subscription then you'll lose access to all the extra stuff. Also if you make extra characters (you get more characters slots if you subscribe) then you'll lose access to those beyond the initial 3 that you get for free.

Also if you go to subscribe make sure that you're on the eu.hellgatelondon.com site and not the US one as you might end up subscribing an old US beta account which won't give benefits to your characters on the euro servers.

Thinking about it mate finances are tight at the mo and it seems to be a little pricey at most stores...if you find a cheap deal let me know :)

well i took the plunge , bought it and like it .... been trying all the classes out on the single player side trying to decide what char i'd use for the mplayer game... its extremely addictive, it has that ' ten more mins then ill stop' and it plays like a mix of say GW/MMo/fps/ in an over the top hack n slash rpg , all good in my book .... also, walking around the underground stations it looks and feels like 'Deus Ex' (not gameplay) seeing all the npc's and other players wandering about in their resplendent armour and glowing weapons ..

I've also been giving this game a go and just trying to find what class I like the best.

I like the idea of a blademaster but I just died too quickly in close combat. Engineer seems like a good bet, but the starting robots are a bit poo. Think I'm going to try a marksman next and see how I get on.

I've been trying the classes out too, give summoner a whirl as it seems stronger than engineer to me (at least in the early levels I played those classes as).

I love the full game even more than the Beta, end up playing for ages on it, much like Diablo 2, mainly because when u do one mission you open up a load more so u feel obliged to complete them so the time just flies by.
Have created a single player Marksman and a multiplayer Evoker, that i play with my mate with.
At first the Evoker seemed a bit weak but after a mid of weapon modding and upgrading she seems pretty hard now, just got to level 8.
