First of all hello everyone it's been a long time since I have been on...

Well I was away for a long time and am a bit rusty considering the updated gossip on technology and what's the next HOT thing.

I'm starting to build up information on my new build and what hardware I want as its time to get rid of my old rig. well I was toddling along on a i5 2500k @ 4.6GHZ mounted into a ASUS P8-Z68 V Pro with 2 6970's 2GB.

My question is what would be a nice performance step up from my old i5 2500k CPU? I need a CPU that over clocks really well...

Also what platform should I build on??? Z77???

My Budget on the Unit alone is around 1500.00 pounds

Many Thanks

Well considering you want a decent step up, and your budget, that sounds like a lga2011 6 core SandyE job. But that would only be a performance step up if you needed all the cores for rendering/encoding/computation. Otherwise it will give the same performance as your 2500k in activities such as gaming.
The new Ivybridge IPC increase is marginal, ~5%, but it doesnt generally clock as highly and so performs on par with sandybridge.
I think your best choice is to either wait Haswell (be about ~10-15% per core performance increase over the 2500k) or go sandyE or IvyE if/when it comes. Whats your intended usage?
