I am guessing a chip in the glass and a cold night.

There was nothing that caught my eye when I got to the car in terms of vandalism.

Are rear screens laminated, that looks like an old toughened screen, no sign of heater wires either.

Damn, I bet that made you jump. Could it have been ice inside the seals which has put immense pressure on the glass? Odd how it would go bang with the slightest movement.

There should be vent holes somewhere to equalize pressure, generally behind the rear seats, check if these are blocked. I partially blocked the ones in my truck to save on noise and if two people close doors at the same time one won't close fully as the pressure is too high.
