Hellraiser (Oct 2022 on Hulu)

Initial thoughts, looks a bit too clean, doesn't have the gritty dirtiness I associate with Hellraiser, I like the lament configuration designs, willing to give new Pinhead a chance, she/he is technically closer to the source material ;) but you can't beat Doug's voice.

Won't write it off just yet, ready for disappointment but cautiously optimistic.

Utterly love Hellraiser, initial short story, the movies (even the bad ones), the recent Boom comic series, Scarlet Gospels - so always happy for more.

This, Doug Bradley made this so iconic, I personally think his voice added a lot of the Cenobites even compared to the books, but let's see if this is any good. I hope it will do for the Hellraiser series what Prey seems to have done. If it's bad, then oh, no tears please.

I’m more than willing to give this a go but I can’t imagine they’ll top my favourite scene/line from the original.

About a year ago (must be, I think it was a Halloween thought) I decided to watch all the Hellraiser movies.

There's only about 4 isn't there?

NOPE!!!
There's 10.
And let me tell you, there's some absolute **** in there.
Hahah

But yeah the first 2 were amazing and classic.

I don't even want to guess how bad the last couple got then, I watched up to the space station one and the one where the writers forgot what Cenobites are and just had Pinhead acting as a kind of cosmic judge trapping someone in a loop and those were more than enough.

I was actually amazed we got a series of films that could tangle with Highlander in how bad the later entries got.

Actually some of the last ones got a "little" better than the trash in the middle.
Still not good by a long shot.

Some of the moves around 5 and 6 weren't even supposed to be Hellraiser movies. The studio had the script for a cop drama or something and then just crowbarred in a Cenobite side story, and it shows.
Hahah :D

The last Hellraiser movie, Judgement I think (with the auditor), had some good ideas, if poorly realised.

I still think Inferno is one of the best of the sequels that doesn't get enough praise - for me it's Hellbound > Hellraiser 1 > Inferno > Hellraiser 3 > Bloodlines > everything else

Fairly sure we had so many bad sequels as they had to keep churning a movie out every few years to retain the rights.

So just been reading that almost the entire movie is going to be practical effects, only CGI is to be Leviathan, some labyrinth movement scenes and not much else.

"Clive barker and David Bruckner had both agreed that practical effects, heavy old school makeup and suits were important and CGI was not to be used at all for the gore or sequences so the actors had a lot of true fear to see and react to when filming scenes."

Hellraiser is the only horror film that as made me wince since I saw The Exorcist as a young lad in the 70s, nothing came close until that.
An honourable mention also goes to Martyrs.

Martyrs sits very high on my favourite horror movies list - so unrelentingly grim and hopeless. I do hope you saw the french language version though :)
