Helmet camera advice

Good price that Wazza

I want a Cam but don't really want a big heavy square thing on the side of my lid, How do they feel when you are pushing on a bit ?

Has anybody tried one of those cigar shaped ones that are cheap ? Seen a few on Amazon reduced from about 80 quid to around 40'ish. The shape & the size of them seems better suited to attaching it to a helmet. Thoughts ?

I have an earlier model GoPro and an earlier model Drift and whilst back then the GoPro was better quality, no idea if it is so with more recent versions, I preferred the Drift as it sat flusher to the helmet. I don't vlog any more but if I did I'd probably have the latest drift for that reason.

Stick it on your chin. On the side you get your helmet ruining a third of the view and even the torch style cameras can be felt pulling your head at speed if mounted on the side.

My GoPro is (was) mounted on the side of my old helmet. There's a lot of buffeting when you start to crank up the speed, and I found that above around 85 mph (on suitable European roads) it was difficult to keep your head still. This left me with quite a neck / head ache after a couple of hours on the motorway on a long trip down to St Vith in Belgium last year.

However, at lower speeds it is absolutely fine, and I find that the angle is wide enough to capture both sides well enough. I like having a tiny bit of the helmet and some of the bike in the frame, as it adds good composition to the video.

@Kreee - Not thought of putting it on my chin but now I have I wouldn't want my speedo in view. Think I'll mount mine on the bike.

@TheAbyss - Nice post Cheers Bud. Good tip about framing the pic & up to 80 is fine I'm old so not as Mad as most, I don't do motorways unless I have to & I wouldn't want to record those trips anyway. I want mine more for the A & B road riding I do & for when I do a track day but on the Track day I am going to fit it to the bike I reckon.

@sgavan - Cheers Bud, I need to make sure whatever one I get has a curved base on one of the fittings so it fits my lid properly.

I hate it, you always miss out on interesting sights or block a great view that way :( 2.40:1 ratio without a helmet ruining the shot is my favourite style of footage.

Bike mounting it great if you have a decent bike without a vibey engine as you can see the lean angles really well. If you have an engine that's like shaking a bag of rocks you end up with a blurry video.

I use the Contour roam2 for everyday commuting and it does the job well. It lasts all week (no charge), is waterproof and easy to switch on and off with gloves on due to the big switch on the top.

Only thing I don't like about it is it's mic position. May as well not have audio at anything over 10mph. But if you're charging it at work, no worries.

See vids in sig for video quality.

I think they go for about £120 now which is a steal imo especially when you compare it to a gopro. The roam2/3 also looks better on a helmet; gopros look ridiculous.

Yeah, I want something for attaching to my cycling helmet whilst commuting to work and i'm thinking that the Contour looks much neater and less visible than the square GoPro. Most people would probably just assume it's a bike light rather than a camera whereas a GoPro sticks out like a sore thumb.

There's been a lot of publicity about cyclists uploading videos to YouTube and sending footage to police locally so I don't want to attract the wrong kind of attention from anyone someone else might have upset by having an obviously visible camera!

It's a shame that none of the cycling/motorbike helmet manufacturers have teamed up with GoPro/Contour and built either a standard attachment fitting for them or a helmet with an integrated camera. Would be a lot easier, more secure and safer than having to cobble together ad-hoc fittings.

They're currently going for £89 which is ridiculous.

Such good value for money.
