Hi all,

I had a problem sometime back last year with my Psu (xfx pro 750w) slowly grinding to a holt. I first noticed the problem when the motherboard (asus p8p67 pro) took around 5mins to turn on. The power light on the mobo would stay off and then after a while start to blink intermittently until it reached solid green, only then could I power up. This gradually got longer and finally stopped altogether. I had the psu checked by an electrical engineer and whilst in contact with xfx they agreed to replace it. After 6 months from installing the new psu the same problem is occurring. I am hoping someone here can help me detect the problem. I don't want to buy another psu just for this to happen again and then have to replace that and the mobo.

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks Dave

PC specs;

Asus p8p67 pro rev3.1 mobo
I7 2600k CPU
Xfx pro 750w psu
Ati radeon hd 6770 graphics card
8gb ram

Could just be unlucky with the psu's you have had - the psu should easily handle the components you have. Could be a case of overheating for eg my psu air intake is facing down and draws air from bottom of Case which isn't an issue in an elevated case such as the bitfenix prodigy - but if the case dors not much clearance and carpet is blocking the intake not gonna be a good receipe.

Thanks for the reply. I have my Pc suspended so don't think it's an overheat problem. Do you think it's best I get in touch with xfx again about the fault or just buy a different psu?

I would get in touch of still under warranty. I personally always go corsair, excellend build quality and never had a problem to date *touch wood*

any power cuts in the ops area? that can kill or degrade psu's,ive had one die due to a power cut

seems strange that they are dying so fast, have an xfx myself and its fine, maybe invest in a power surge protector or uninterruptable power supply?

But aren't xfx psu's made by seasonic??

they are indeed, and AFAIK, the only manufacturer (other than seasonic) who ONLY use seasonic parts

XFX
Black Edition – Seasonic
Core Edition – Seasonic
XXX Edition – Seasonic

edit: bit of a long shot, but have you considered a possible short on the back of the motherboard? they usually result in much more severe symptoms, but depends what is shorting, it could be feeding some current back into the PSU, slowly cooking it. might be worth building out of the case/rebuilding to eliminate dust

I have it plugged into a surge protector, so would think this isn't a problem. I will re-ensemble it outside the case over the wkend.

Just find it weird that when it does eventually turn o it's works 100% wish I could diagnose the problem, ppl in my local tech shop seem to think its just a bad batch of psu's
