Overclocking E6300: 965 or 975X chipset?

Hi folks, bit new to this OCuk forum! Need a bit of advice

I've read a bit on the forums that if you want to overclock a E6300/6400 then you have to use a 965 chipset (such as DS3, DS4, Asus P5B deluxe etc).

I was thinking of getting a E6300 but going for the 975X chipset based Asus P5W DH Deluxe WiFi board. I like this mobo due to the features, wireless etc and don't mind spending the cash for it.

Will I still be okay to use this board to overclock the E6300 to around 3GHz+ (i.e. 400+ FSB) or am I best sticking with a DS4 or P5B deluxe?

Any help appreciated :)

Welcome to the forums. :)

Yeah should be fine to clock the E6300, theres a couple of ppl in the big overclocking thread here that have the 6300 over 3ghz on that board, and its a cracker by all accounts. :)

i'm without a conroe rig yet but i've researched enough to give you a decent answer.

the max FSB you will get on a 975x board is likely to be around 420-430, i'm talking 24/7 stable not 1mb super-pi e-penis benching. you might luck out and get a good one which might hit 450 but it's unlikely, you also might have to do with 400 as a max.

so assuming you get 420 as a max FSB with the 6300 you will top out around 2.94ghz, if this is enough for you then a 975x board will be fine.

but bear in mind 965 is cheaper, has better southbridge ICH8R (except DS3) and has more overclock headroom for lower multipliers like the 6300/6400.

Yeah im not that clued up on the Conroes yet, just what ive been reading up about them really, im getting my Connie next week, but dunno wether to get the 6400 over the 6300 as the difference is only about £30, but im going for the DS3 board. :)

i keep switching between 975/965 every 2nd day, but why don't u go for the DS4 instead loadsamoney?? ICH8R intel matrix mmmm :D

i'm definitely grabbing a 6600 but i'm leaning towards 965 for the nicer SB over 975 and also more o/c headroom for water/phase setup, i still can't see any evidence of the conroes overclocking better on 975 v 965

Thanks guys, might have to rethink on the Asus P5W DH for now then as I want to push the 6300 as far as it goes (on water cooling). Will probably go for the DS4 or try get a WiFi version of the Asus P5B Deluxe somewhere. Decisions decisions!! :)

Will see if anybody else has any thoughts on it..

Well im an overclocking virgin , and been advised that the 6300 and the DS3 is a cracking combination to go for, and i don't know the differences between the DS3/DS4, or what they mean :o , but i may go for the 6400 instead seen as its only about £30 more as said, im an INTEL virgin to come to think of it as well as ive always had AMD's, so im going into the unknown.

Ill be taking it gently ohh err. :D

DS4 is just the DS3 with the ICH8R southbridge instead of the plain ICH8. can't do raid with standard ICH8 so not big deal if that's not your thing :)

i don't know of any other differences, i think that's it.

byrnzee yeh if it's going under water i'd be looking at 965 boards, especially if you have the 6300.

p5b-deluxe wifi looks a nice one.

chipset cooling, reputedly better power design, extra physical x16 slot (only runs at x4 though), firewire.
The DS4 is the 1 that I would probably buy.

Ahh thats ok then, can't say im interested in raid, or the extra PCI-E slot, DS3 is still a good clocker by all accounts.

Thanks. :)
