Hi

So i purchased a pre built system from overclockers but on delivery i noticed that the cpu cooler had come loose and wasn't attached to the CPU... pretty dissapointing.

However i now want to try and attach it again myself however im literally a complete noob (hence the reason i got a pre built pc...) and need some help in doing so.

Below is a picture of my motherboard

and Here is the CPU Cooler

it also comes with this thing which i think is meant to clamp it down

Now my problem is that i don't have a clue how im meant to attach this clamp thing, i assume i have to place it over the base of the cpu cooler but it has nothing to screw into it, it just kinda sits there and doesn't attach properly. im utterly confused :(

any help would be appreciated

new tim ? you mean the cpu paste ? LONG... i dont have any, this was meant to be pre built, very unimpressed with overlockers.

also doesn't explain how i clamp the thing down ?

Id webnote the store and see what they can do about it.

Link them to this thread, they scout the forums often. :)

They will either give you advice, or offer to sort it for you.

any chance of expanding on how i "id webnote" the store ? i dont really know what that means ?

looking at the pics i would guess that piece goes over the middle of the heatsink and screws into them holes in the middle of the 2 brackets on the board

Care to tell us which cooler it is?

I imagine the piece you have sits on top of the base of the cooler and then you screw it into the 2 brackets fitted to the motherboard.

cheers for the link, posted it in the CS section

as i said the piece doesn't screw into the 2 brackets, it wont tighten up or latch onto the two brackets :(

The CPU cooler is a Prolimatech Super Mega CPU Cooler

If it won't screw in then you're not doing it properly or something is damaged.

The two "dimples" on the cross piece need to fit into the two holes in the base of the cooler.

yeah i know, my point is it doesn't screw in like it should... something is wrong.

whoever built this pc didn't do it properly or messed something up :/

Can you take the screws out of the aluminium cross plate please (the separate piece that's designed to secure the heatsink)

Do the mounting brackets have a threaded metal bit inside?

I see what you're getting at.

It looks like the threaded metal bits may have been pulled out of the brackets attached to the motherboard.

Yeah it's odd, there's the possibility the AMD retention screws were used instead also? There are 4 sets of screws to attach the aluminium strip to the retention brackets, 2 are for AMD, the other 2 are two types of sprung screws iirc, one is for standard securing, the black screws are for much greater securing force if needed.

OcUK didn't ship it in that condition.

Your picture of the crossbar looks like the thread mounts might be pulled out of the bars it attaches to. Just a guess.

Like it came loose in transit and more than likely broke loose from being dropped or falling.

the mounting brackets do not have a threaded metal bit inside, if you look at the second photo of the clamp bit i think you can see they have come out and are now attached to the clamp.

i've managed to undo one of the screws and put back the threaded metal bit inside the bracket, can't seem to unscrew the other one at the moment though. need to get a better screwdriver as its properly screwed in to the max

My guess is the mounting was broken in transit.

I would report it to Ocuk and not do anything until you have discussed it with them.
