Hi guys,

Recently upgraded the CPU in my HP dc7700 to a newer type and now I receive a Microcode error on bootup and the system fan is spinning at a mad rate.

Anyway, I need to boot from a USB stick and install this update.

The HP instrutions are:

USB Flash Media Micro Code Flashing in DOS

DOS Flash (flashbin.exe, patch.opt) is the DOS compatible system BIOS flash method that can be used from any DOS bootable storage device. Patch.opt is the required driver for FlashBin.exe. Assign Password (assignpw.exe) can be used with DOS Flash if a Setup Password has been previously set on the target system. To flash the system BIOS Micro Code from a USB storage device, you will need to copy the contents of the DOS Flash folder to a bootable USB drive. To see a more complete description of the DOS flash utilities, view Flashbin.txt located in the DOS Flash folder. To view more information on making a DOS bootable flash media device, view DOSFM.txt in the DOS Flash folder. This folder also contains a binary image of the Micro Code. The binary image file is named UXX_MMmm.bin where "UXX" is the abbreviated BIOS family, "MM" is the major version number, and "mm" is the minor version number.

The contents in my USB stick are:

ASSIGNPW.EXE
DOSFM.txt
FlashBin.exe
Flashbin.txt
patch.opt
README.TXT
U7E_0106.BIN

The instructions tell me to move all them onto the USB stick.

Everytime I boot to USB the PC just ignores and goes straight into Windows.

Am I missing something on the USB stick? I didn't format it in anyway, just found it and stuck the stuff on the instructions told me to put on. Any other ideas?

The issue you're having with booting, I think, is that the USB stick has no bootable OS.

If those files were in a folder on a bootable dos CD/USB then you'd be able to access after the boot.

Also, some BIOS can be updated from windows these days. Maybe worth a look.

Jack.
