Hi all,

A little over a year ago I built my first beast:
  • ASUS Striker Extreme 680I SLI Socket 775
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping
  • Kühler CPU Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
  • 4GB Ocz DDR2
  • Gainward 8800 GTX 768MB
  • Seagate ST3500630AS 500GB

I've been monitoring the temp of the system when I'm doing various tasks such as gaming, compiling, general use.

When playing supreme commander the GPU temperature fluctuates between 74 and 76 C (considered 'amber' temp by Nvidia's monitor app), which doesn't sound so bad to me, but it does idle around 56C and increases quite quickly, no matter the load. Not sure if it's a good temp or not. Comparing it to the CPU's average core temp when idling (~34) could it be a little high?

Any ideas as to what I could get to assist cooling the Gfx card? Should I bother? I might temp. rages normal?

Nothing to worry about really, its just your gpu runs hotter than your CPU, quite normal, you could spend a couple hundred quid setting up a water cooling system to get cooler temps, but theres no need, save your money

4870x2 on auto fan cooling idles around 75-80c and goes up to 90 odd when gaming, 76c is fine!

I know its not the same card but just showing that all graphics cards run that hot without issue :)

Thanks for clarifying. I'm used to staring at my CPU temp and getting concerned with what it can increase to.

Any other suggestions for my setup?

No your set up looks good, so long as you're overclocking that CPU ;)

lol too scared. Just got the new heatsink and I'm tempted to play with overclocking. Will have to read the guides etc and perhaps even look into water cooling if I do bother.

Yeah its a crime not OC that chip really, read up on it and give it a go, just remember to start low and work up, you cant go far wrong, if it fails to post at any time just clr cmos and go back to your last stable set up.
You shouldnt need WC either so long as youve got a decent cooler
