So my bro is thinking of buying his first home cinema system with amp and free standing speakers. Here is what he is thinking of getting:

He would just like to know what you guys think about his choices because I know there are some pretty knowledgable people on this forum. :o

Are they good? If not, why not? What would you recommend within that sort of price range? Also is that a good place to order from? Where do you chaps shop?

Thanks in advance :D

I can only give advice on the amp as I was in a similar situation a couple of weeks ago. I went for the Onkyo 507 in the end but the Sony is a good choice, he could also consider the Yamaha 465 which is also in the same price range. Superfi is a reputable dealer so no worries there. ;)

Again, I'm no expert, but at that price, second hand is really worth a look. Could get great value for money that way!

Agreed. I can't say I've heard of those speakers, that's not to say there aren't good, but I'd much prefer to spend £300 on http://www.avforums.com/forums/spea...-quad-21l-floorstanders-high-gloss-maple.html for example :)

As far as amplifiers go, while you can get better deals second hand, especially with the older amps (that WILL sound better), though that depends how much emphasis you wish to place on the HD formats.

I was looking at the same sony amp and also the onkyo 507. I went to richer sounds and heard them both and i ended buying the onkyo 507 as i prefered it.

i notice that sony amp has 4 hdmi in and 1 hdmi out, does this act as a switcher box for video also ? and if the amp is switched off does it pass anything through still ?
