Hi all

Now then, I know diddly about home networking, but have managed to connect my 360 to my pc's unbuilt ethernet port. And setup internet connection sharing. So amazingly I have created an account with XBLive and managed to down load a demo, woohoo :)

Thing is I dont want to have to turn my pc on every time I wanna play on XBLive. I've tried to make sense of xbox.com's helpful guides etc... But I'm still a bit confused as to what is going to be the right stuff to shop for.

At the moment I'm with Wanadoo using their USB Speedtouch modem on a 1.1Mbps connection.

Now then, do I need a Gateway to take over the job of my usb modem, and do I plug the pc and the 360 into this gateway using the ethernet cables? And does this thing plug straight into the phone socket?
Have I got that right?

And could anyone recomend a model that will plug in and work without having to be a rocket scientist :D

I dont need to go wireless cos everything is sat on my desk here, so cables are fine. Oh and the cheaper the better, just as long as its compatable and works.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mick

I was about to mention the DG834G which is the wireless version of the router that you mentioned above. Yes it'll do the job nicely. Just make sure you flash the router to the latest firmware version asap.

I've got the DG834G which is ultra reliable. It's hooked upto the 360 via a wired ethernet cable like you need, as my 360 sits on the desk with my tft's already.

Great minds think alike :D

So if I purchase one of these I can dump wanadoo's speedtouch modem and just use the DG834?

Er.. Dumb question, but how does the 360 know what my wanadoo username and password is when it wants to connect to the internet? Am I missing something?

Your router will work independently of your PC. While your pc is shut off, the router is always connected to your ISP providing you don't yank the phone cable out. I've not touched my router in ages and its taped to the underside of my desk, keeping my main pc on 24/7 :p It's vastly different from a usb modem where you 'dial in'. You'll ponder how on earth you managed with that usb modem soon :D

The router has a setup page that you can access from IE or Firefox and in there you specify your isp's logon user/pass details. Once thats done, then it should connect without a hitch and you're sorted.

Then, anything you connect to those rear ports will automatically be shared via the router. My DG834 has 2 pc's and the 360 hooked upto the rear and has wireless mode activated so I can use my laptop around the house or outside.

So if you hook up the 360 or another pc then your bandwidth just gets shared. The 360 has no setup to do reallly tbh, you just goto its network page and just let it detect how its hooked upto the net and its all done :)
