OK guys, apologies of this has been asked before. In approx 4 weeks I will have enough money to replace my 3 and a half year old base unit.

I've got a good idea about some of the hardware i'll be buying, but ideally need advice on how to mildy overclock an E6600, and what mobo and ram to buy within budget. I can't spend more than £800 inc, if possible less would be even better.

I just need to know which RAM and MOBO (cheap as possible) would be good if I wanted to OC this processor to say 2.8, and how to do it. Would I also need a third party CPU cooler? Is anything glaringly wrong with these list of components?

Any advice from you gurus would be much appreciated.

I'd change the hard drive dude.

If its anything like the sata1 version it won't be as fast as the other drives on the market.

Personally i'd choose Western Digital because they make the least noise and perform quite well.

If you want a faster drive, the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10's are suppose to be near Raptor speeds (fast).

Do you want to Overclock?.... can't answer the board/memory question without knowing if you intend to overclock, if not a cheaper solution would be better.

Yup I want to (mildly) overclock, say to about 2.8ghz.

Just need to know what RAM and MOBO will let me do this, and as cheaply as possible. Thanks fior the HDD info, chose that brand due to it being the only one never to die on me.

Depends who answers the question really.

Favoured boards at the moment are i believe....

DS3 (for the lower cpu's 6300 / 6400)
DS4 (for the conroes 6600 upwards)

or

P5B
P5W DH

Can't say much on the ASUS boards as i've not read much about them for a little while now, seems a lot of people using the DS3's and DS4's.

Click search at the top and search for 'conroe', you'll find a wealth of information in the 'spec me up' and 'help me with new conroe build' threads, amongst various other ones, they've all got useful info there though.

Personally i'd choose a 6300 / 6400 and stick it on a DS3, it'll do 2.8 / 2.9 with half decent memory.

My Asus P5W DH Deluxe gets my E6300 to 2.8 and even 2.9 but no further so far, so it depends if you want some room for higher overclocks in the future.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

So, what mobo and ram would you buy with an E6600 to mildly overclock it? I'm not looking for the mecca of all overclocks just taking it from 2.4 to 2.8ish, no more.

What is the cheapest RAM and MOBO combination that will allow me to do this?

For an E6600 Gigabyte DS4 or Asus P5W DH Deluxe - depends on price difference and preference I guess.

Any PC6400 RAM should do the job. I am told G.Skills PC6400 is better than the others but it is more expensive compared to the others, Geil would be a cheaper option.

Those mobo's seem to cost a lot :( are there any cheaper ones that would allow a small overclock? I've had a good look at all the mobo's, but don't know which ones would allow me to gain the small increase.

Also, would I need to purchase another CPU cooler for this small increase, or would the stock one do the job?
