Help and Advice re: SQL Training Options

mySQL is completely free and a great place to start. The basics of SQL are very similar accross all platforms, the syntax varies slightly though.

If he's coming from Access I would recommend one of the SQL Server Express editions first rather than MySQL as it will be a lot more familiar.
 
Thanks for the links. I'm going to look into MySQL. I also have SQL Server Express and SQL Server Professional as mentioned, so i'll talk to the guys in IT here who are DBA's (and are gits, for the record) and see how it goes. I'll try and get some books and tutorials and see how it goes. I guess qualifications can wait for now :)

Optimising a T-SQL query would require an indepth knowledge of T-SQL and knowledge of the underlying data structures.

Administering a database (security, maintenance etc) wouldn't require a knowledge of T-SQL as such.

Personally I'd grab a copy of SQL Server 2008 Express, the management studio and see if you can get a good book on T-SQL.
